Good morning gardeners. This is the first year that I will have a fall garden. I have decided to try few broccoli and cabbage plants. I decided to visit our local County Co-Op a couple of days ago and they had starts of both and I bought a nine-pack cell of each. I hope they do well because we are still having 90 degree days with overnights in the mid to high 60’s. They also had starts for various types of tomato plants which kind of surprised me.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

Good morning. Congratulations on your fall garden.

This year we have very early low temperatures, into the 30’s the past three days. I’ve dug up tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers and put them in the greenhouse in hopes of some ripening and harvest. The tomatoes have just started producing.

However, my broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage are doing great. I had a record year for eggplant and onions, looks like the potatos will be good also.

The zucchini and yellow squash did very poorly. The first time in my long years of gardening that I didn’t have squash covering every counter and in bags to give to the neighbors.

With our very strange weather this year, I’m going to have to learn how to garden all over again.

I’ve got broccoli and cabbage starts (from seed) in some little plastic cell packs right now. I’m going to try to set those out this weekend. Also a cucumber (something from Jungs) that makes in 34 days and some winter squash (very early making ones) that I will cover with frost cloth later on.

Hubby and I pulled 100lbs of argonaut squash off of just one vine this morning. More to come. That was 4 big squashes (20lbs+ each) and a little bitty guy of only 9lbs. We’re going to let them cure on our screened in porch for a couple days before bringing them in. Supposedly, from the reviews, they taste pretty good. Next year we’ll plant them earlier (didn’t get them in the ground till mid May this year hope to try for middle March next year and use the frost cloth for cool nights), mulch around them to keep grass down and keep them watered and fertilized. I used algoflash on the vines a couple weeks ago and they’re setting more little fruits with abandon. I’ll start them out with that stuff next year!

I loved your pictures and was happy to read about your parents. We live in DeSoto County. I noticed that you are in Mississippi also.

I need to get started on my fall crops....the cole crops should do pretty well this time of year in the south. Have you tried growing collards? They really did well even in the hot weather... they did really well until about July when the heat and bugs finally did them in. I thought they would make a great survival food as they just keep going and going...I plan to make a bigger plot of them, along with some of the other greens like kale and swiss chard. Let me know if you need seeds. I buy too many and save my own too. :)

trying to decide on the best way to plant here for the fall planting season...I think I’m gonna make myself one of those square foot gardens and put it a lot closer to the house than the first attempt with a regulkar garden. Also got one of those upside down tomato thingers at the flea market...will find a somewhat shady spot to hang it so the sun doesnt scorch the maters like in the spring...

I’m sure I’ll think of something else. Now all I need are the funds for the coarse vermiculite...

With all the rain we got from Hermie, I am waiting for my garden to dry out. I have leaf lettuce planted, but the rain washed out part of my rows. My shallots are coming along very well.

Back in mid August I was playing with the idea of some kind of fall garden but never got arround to starting some seeds. When I saw the broccoli and cabbage starts I was compelled to buy some. We will see how it goes from here.

Sounds like you are in central Texas. I live about 35 miles NW of Austin, and we had a bnch of rain. Both gages ran over, so I really don’t know how much we had at home. The news showed us to be in the 10” - 11” rain area.

It should go just fine! We had a fall garden last year and loved it. You might try to find some chinese cabbage seeds too. They resent transplanting but are wonderful in stirfry dishes.

I added a cup of cooked squash puree from one of my Long of Naples to my kids pancakes this week along with 1/2 cup of brown sugar. They just about killed themselves eating pancakes. I’m just glad I got some beta carotene (and fiber!) in them without too much muss and fuss LOL. My youngest keeps asking for ‘cookie cakes!’.

Oh, lettuce is great to start right now too. I’m going to plant a whole bunch of different kinds this weekend. I did that last year and had lettuce until January when the slugs got in under my coverings and went to town. Grrrr. I had to uncover and lose all my lettuce because I couldn’t find any slug bait in January. I’m prepared this year :)

I’ve got several monster packages of lettuce and a pound of swiss chard seeds (yes really). If you’re going to be in jtown around lunch sometimes soon let me know and I’ll send some with hubby.

Well, I’m coming off the best producing garden ever.

I’ve made gallons of tomato sauce with more than enough tomatoes left for stewed tomatoes.

I have a nice supply of frozen zucchini bread.

I’ve got green beans I’m letting mature to save the seeds. Anyone have any experience with that and could give me some hints? Like how can I tell when the beans are ripe for harvesting, and how to treat them to save them?

I would try some lettuce but my wife will not eat it nor collards nor spinach. I will have a very tough time getting her to try the broccoli but I am thinking about trying a broccoli cheese soup, if I get any broccoli to grow. Wonder if a cheese soup like that can be frozen?
