Study: Flamboyant male dancing attracts women best

LONDON — John Travolta was onto something. Women are most attracted to male dancers who have big, flamboyant moves similar to the actor's trademark style, British scientists say in a new study. Kris McCarty and colleagues at Northumbria University and the University of Gottingen in Germany asked 19 men aged 18 to 35 who were not professional dancers to dance in a laboratory for one minute to a basic drum rhythm. They filmed the men's movements with a dozen cameras, and then turned those movements into computer-generated avatars so the study could focus on moves, not appearances. Scientists then showed the dancing avatars to 37 women, who rated their skills on a scale of 1 to 7. According to the women, the best dancers were those who had a wide range of dance moves and focused on the head, neck and torso. The research was published this week in the journal, Biology Letters, a publication of Britain's Royal Society. It was paid for by Northumbria University.

I call Barbara Streisand on this story's title.

This is still the reigning champ when it comes to attracting women best.

“Dancing is acting like a woman, huh.
That is a relativly recent development.
Real men have short hair as well, right?”

I was thinking about the Chippendales routines actually when I wrote that. Or similar environments. Dancing per se, not so much, as long as it’s not more like sex in public, which IIRC, happened at some high school dance last spring. Beautiful dancing is just that.

One time, I saw a couple who were in love, doing a paso doble. Couldn’t take my eyes of them. Another time, there was a couple with this guy who looked like a construction worker and keys on his belt, with her in a two piece white thing with pants & a belt with coins on it, and I lost my breath just watching them.

I can cut a rug myself. Ordinarily old school dances. Don’t get much chance at that and never had a partner that I practiced with.

I’ve even posted a YouTube here on FR of a woman doing a belly dance in the ME somewhere. I have no idea who she is, but she was captivating.

I am also a huge flamenco fan. I guess a person can take courses on ‘eyes’ even in flamenco dancing. I saw some little kids doing flamenco once. I remember that one, too, as they weren’t just good. The little guy took off his jacket and threw it, hitting the person I was sitting next to right in the face.

IIRC, the WH had to raise the chandalier for Barishnikov’s leaps at the pinnacle of his career. I enjoy watching “White Nights” partially to see the contrast between Hines & Barishnikov’s styles and the ways they use their bodies when they dance.

I’m not much for the looking away ballroom dancing style, but it’s clear that the footwork is intricate and the partnership comes with practice. There are some pretty interesting dance routines in (ordinarily) older movies, too, of course. It does take practice and more practice. IIRC, Ann Miller talked of practicing until her feet were bleeding.

I have “Riverdance” and the CD. Even went to see one of the shows based on that. And I saw the Tap Dogs for $10 prior to their going to New York. I even got wet from the routine they did in water, spashing around.

It’s also true that some people, especially guys, don’t think they can dance worth spit, when it’s just that they don’t have the confidence or opportunity to learn. Yet it’s those guys who are often the most interesting people. Ditto for women.

Admittedly, the examples illustrated above are, well, unfortunate. However, Elvis did attract a devoted following with his “big moves.”

If you have ever ballroom danced with a fellow who really knows how to dance, there is a strong guidance and mastery that is very sexual to the female partner.

Or a woman, too, for that matter. I forget the name of the dance that originated in Argentina, I think, but people who do that well look like they’re floating or winding around each other like autumn leaves gliding on air.

Hell, every time I dance, the women line up to call EMS
cause they think, “Hey look, that poor old fat guy’s having a seizure.”

Thank you for your thoughful reply.
I cannot dance very well, but I am trying to learn.
FWIW, I also have a short hair cut. :)

I agree that “flamboyant” is a bit of a loaded word.

:)

I can get on a tear sometimes. The whole treating of men like dirt & equivalent to pole & lap dancers is demeaning to women as well as to men. That’s better said than my whole rant, I suppose. People are visual creatures though.

I’ve seen the kinds of girls who are attracted to a guy’s dance moves. Usually attractive with not much going on upstairs. Not exactly the type you want to bring home to mama.
