Whatever you choose, make sure you have tabasco sauce.

Dinty Moore canned goods. The stew is awesome for something cheap in a can. MRE cost way to much and don’t taste all that good. Got a 5 year shelf life, but I’ve read that it’s still great 10 years later.

I’ve got my fingers crossed, I really don’t want to pull the boat and board up this year. I’ve rebuilt the dock 3 times in the last 10 years.

Good luck!

I have alot of pasta, egg noodles, rice, beans, etc stored, along with those gravy pack thingies you can mix up.

So one day I decided to have an after-the-end-of-the-world lunch. Boiled up a couple cups of egg noodles, made some of the pork gravy, had noodles with gravy and black pepper and home grown oregano for lunch.

It was delicious! Seriously! It’s not hard to still eat very well, just takes a bit of prep and planning.

Check out Mountain House. It’s geared to the backpacking crowd. Good quality and keeps for five or so years.

The best MRE is the one you exchanged for a PB&J and a pudding cup.

How about hauling ass before the hurricane gets there? You have a weeks notice. I live on the coast too. In 5 hrs I can be in Atlanta eating a steak. Dumb post.

My experience was with C-rats. any of those would work fine for me (except the Lima beans).

As a food service professional that dealt with MREs in USAF Services, forget it unless you and your family have already been through basic training.

Menu fatigue and palatablility is a killer. Buy canned goods and storable foods that your family already eats.

14,000-15,000 calories is about equal to a case of MREs. 2.5 lbs of peanut butter is about 6200 calories for comparison.

Water is more important than food. 2 gallons of bleach and a way to boil water is critical.

It's cheaper to put your own together. Plus, you can take these hiking, to the range, even work.

build your own MRE

Much information is on this site as well:

First, I second the Tabasco sauce recommendation. Laugh all you may, but I go to Cash & Carry locally at least once a year, and buy a case of Tabasco brand Garlic Pepper Sauce, the best of breed. You can hunt local stray dogs if necessary and make them palatable with Tabasco.

Item two is an MSR Miniworks. Water is way more necessary than food, and a pump action cartridge water filter solves two problems at once if the water supply is compromised. First, you have fresh drinking water, even if it is stored in a rain barrel, a hot water heater, or a toilet reservoir. Secondly, you don't have to come up with any fuel for a fire to boil, or create possibly unpalatable water using iodine or bleach.

Having had many MRE's in my time, both as a veteran and as a backpacker, they have their virtues, but in a fixed site "bug in," what I go with is a mix of preferred canned goods with their contents Sharpied onto the lid in the event of label loss from flooding or whatnot, over the expense of anything more than a few MREs placed in reserve in my bug out bag.

Twelve MRE or knock-off meals at $50-70 per dozen is freakin' expensive compared to canned goods, let alone buying enough to get by for weeks, especially when the only real world advantage is weight savings and the possibility of a minor morale boost from a warm meal if clean water is available, differences which are not at a premium in either a home or vehicle storage situation.

Canned goods, a world class field packable water filter, a metal match, and an authentic Swiss Army Knife or a name brand multitool with a tested can opener, are better investments for non end of the world disasters than anything other than a three day supply of MREs.

Most are good, except for “vegetarian omelete.” Yech. My favorite is shrimp jambalaya.

The MRE’s I've had were all good,,,

Water is at the top of the list,,,

Ammo is second,,,

Food is third,,,

I've got some “Mil Spec “ MRE’s that are good,,,

Most canned goods are a way to have something different

Dried beans ,,, rice and a can of Spam make a meal,,,
(water),,,
Cast iron cookwear and a few bricks makes a kitchen,,,

Magnesium fire starters will start a fire quick,,,

Sweets,,,candy,,,small cans of fruit are great,,,(water),,,

Best to sit down and make a list...

There's nothing like a good MRE for what ails ya". The old beef patties, potato patties, and pork patties were great. You could munch them in the dark, and wouldn't be able to tell if you are eating the cardboard packaging. With some MRE cheese, they also treated diarrhea.

The chocolate nut rolls in the C-rations were also excellent tools. You could use them as chock-blocks for your vehicle when you were changing a tire, you could chew on them to break off an annoying tooth, or throw the at bad-guys when your position was being overrun. Nobody liked chocolate nut-rolls, so the will always be some laying around.

BTW- get a P38 can opener. One of the best tools ever invented!

Is sodium content an issue? One thing to watch is some MRE-type meals are very high in sodium. I’ve found that to be particularly challenging since one of our clan has high blood pressure.
