Three well-worn bandmates and a venue in Washington
a throng of fans is there to meet them
Something about this situation is a little different
The band has survived family losses, changing tastes
and the 1980s

These men are not young
Like most of us, the effects of time's war of attrition
have been valiantly resisted
The holder of the hourglass takes no prisoners
Yet this is not a time to tally losses

When they hit the floor and go to work tonight
Punch an invisible clock, and start the job
as they have for thousands of evenings since 1974
they and the audience engage in a conversation
a dialogue in which an amplified band and thousands of people
go to great lengths to express their mutual appreciation

No, it is not 1979 or even 1999 tonight
but for a brief moment for all of us
It may very well be
Fans bring their sons and daughters
Some young children, some young adults
Watching three fifty-somethings, become 26 again
and seeing the same transformation in Mom or Dad
All the while taking it in with abandon
in the aptly named Time Machine Tour

Such a lovely, precious graphic, yorkie. And I love Elvis singing one of the prettiest songs ever. I have always heard he loved gospel music and would have been happy singing it all the time.
