Day 334 July 30, 1940

Battle of Britain Day 21. Bad weather (low clouds and rain showers) restricts flying all day. 5 German raids target the Scottish coast and Northeast England. At noon, Spitfires of 603 Squadron shoot down 1 Heinkel He111 off Montrose Scotland. Further South, convoys are attacked in the English Channel off the coast of Essex and Suffolk. At 3.30 PM, Hurricanes of 85 Squadron shoot down 1 Messerschmitt Bf110 of Southwold, Suffolk. No British fighters are lost. Overnight, there are a few small bombing raids over Southeast England, South Wales and the Midlands.

Destroyer HMS Delight sinks in Portland harbour after being bombed yesterday in the English Channel.

I just love the fact that alongside all the bloodcurdling news of tanks, invasions, bombings and bombardments, there is ALWAYS an advert for some item of ladies fashion.

And today ladies, we bring you the “Pouf Tam”.

The department stores are paying the Times' bills, that's for sure. I don't go out of my way to find ladies' apparel ads. I normally only print the ones next to the articles I want. What you see is probably a pretty fair sample of what the sales department placed. Though anything larger than a quarter page is unlikely to show up here, so if some business advertises exclusively in that size or larger we will miss it. I think those are mostly department stores, too.

LOL, no, we didn't think you were secretly on retainer from Macy's, in one of the most cunning stealth-advertising campaigns of all time.

Think of it this way. The old man is reading his morning paper on the war and he thinks, "Thinking of the old battleship, I think her birthday is coming up". And there's an ad for what to get her right there.
