Dallas police are investigating the bizarre death of a man who they say asked a friend to shoot him so he could blame his injuries on his ex's new boyfriend and gain custody of his son.
Police said Dwayne Moten, 20, was shot Saturday. He was driving a car in Dallas, stopped at an intersection and got out of his car, screaming for help.
"He yelled he had been shot," a police spokeswoman said.
Police arrived on scene and found Moten was suffering from "several gunshot wounds."
Sr. Cpl. Kevin Janse told Fox News that Moten was shot by a friend and alleged it was all so Moten could blame the shooting on his ex's new boyfriend.
"He wanted custody of that child and he was willing to take a bullet to get custody of the child," Janse alleges in a video on the Fox website.
Moten died from the injuries. His friend, Jacob Wheeler, 20, has been charged with murder.
"There's legal ways to get custody of a child and taking a bullet, and ultimately dying, is definitely not one of those ways," Janse said.

I don’t think he thought this one all the way through . . . .
Owwwww. I hate it when I get shot there. My bizarre custody case is very tender and sensitive. And it is so awkward getting the bullets removed.
What friends are for. I’m not sure how I’d vote if I were on the jury. Is there a charge for criminal stupidity?
Well some people will take a bullet for their friend. This guy just got it reversed.
Late-term Darwin Award?
Isn’t he the brother of the guy who used a .22 LR cartridge as a substitute fuse in his car and got a bullet in his groin?
Charles Darwin, please pick up the white courtesy phone.
Hmmm...I could buy that he asked the friend to shoot him to set up the girlfriend’s new BF, but why 3 shots instead of 1? I wonder if the friend/shooter is telling the truth.
Almost everyone who shows up with a bullet wound to the left forearm also has nitrogen stains on their right hand, and powder burns over the bullet wound.
Good luck convincing anybody that it wasn't self inflicted.
On the other hand, you could get your buddy “Wheeler” to shoot you! But be SURE to specify that you only want to be shot ONCE; apparently his buddy Wheeler thought he needed three.... just to be sure.
"Nuthin's too good fer MY buddy!"
It was the “multiple” gunshot wounds that kind of threw me too. I can see taking a shot in the leg or a graze to the abdomen but this doesn’t pass the smell test I don’t care how many beers you asked your buddy to hold.
One shot would have done it. Did he think mulitple shots would get him more child support from his ex?
I really don’t see the problem as long as it was between two consenting adults.
