Lohan Needs Treatment -- Not Jail Time
FNC ^ | 07.14.10 | By Ellen Ratner

indsay Lohan's 90-day sentence is a perfect example of how messed up and ridiculous our criminal justice system is.

All of the available research on alcoholism shows that it is a disease. Locking someone up in jail, not allowing them access to other inmates and not providing treatment has been going on for hundreds of years in this country. It is not consistent with what is known about treatment and its outcome.

I was a drunk.

Jail time was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I guarantee Lindsay will be staying off the sauce as long as her sentence lasts.

Sorry, as an alcoholic with nearly nine years sober, I disagree. The 90 days will give the little drunk time to dry out. Then, if she wants to get serious about treatment, it’s up to her, and she can make a clear-headed decision. AA can help her out. It’s up to her seek it out.

The jail time is for dis-obeying the court.

Gee, maybe she needs both, which is precisely what the judge has ordered. Seems reasonable to me.

She got a first chance at an alcohol diversion program (rather than jail), which she failed to meet the minimum requirements. She got a second bite at the apple, and still she failed by missing 8 out of 27 meetings.

The jail time is a punishment and an incentive - she's being punished for failing to meet the terms of her probation, and she's being incentivised to meet the terms of her new probation. The magic of due process.

Incidentally, MANY states are MUCH more punitive when dealing with a person who has two DUI's within a five-year period, to say nothing of a two-week period, a la Lindsey.

I had 6 months to reflect on my life, what I had lost, gains I failed to make, and realize that jail sucked enough for me to not want to go back.

I believe the actor Robert Downey Jr. has said as much. Not surprisingly, he is not a Hollywood Liberal..

The threat and imposition of jail time is often required for addicts to get treatment.

We recovering drunks understand what our way too compassionate society does not...YOU NEED TO HIT BOTTOM...You need to feel the pain..the consequences of your actions...If the gullible public understood what the success rate of rehab is, they'd be mortified. It's something like 5%. It's the easier, softer way not compassionate by any stretch of the imagination.

That being said, I have nothing against rehab, but not as an alternative to jail. Sorry.

She’s not being jailed for being an alcoholic, I understand.

She’s being jailed for her DUI and multiple failures to appear.

Who the hell cares!

The little spoiled twit has contributed nothing to society, other than to spur some glossy mag sales to the addle-brained simpering idiots that buy them.

This is the most non-issue I can think of.

The world is going to hell at the hands of the likes of that damned obama and we're expected to give a rat's ass about this silly little drunk skank?

Give me a break!

Well then... she will move in as soon as she is out of jail. You will be her legal guardian... ratt-ner face.

Bull. The jail time should be a wonderful deterrent and a real consequence for a woman who seems to be very unfamiliar with the idea of consequences of one’s actions.

Wrong. This time she needs something punitive and THEN treatment. She’s been given plenty of chances to clean up her act. Plus, she’s an idiot.

No, Lindsay Lohan needs JAIL, then treatment. She needs to learn that behavior has consequences.

She should have been in jail for at least six months for the two DUIs. She does need treatment, but most people need to have a major wake up call before they actually want to pursue the treatment that will really change things.

Court ordered treatment is usually a waste of time. The person must actually want to get sober, no one else can force them to change their lives.
