74% Americans Know What the 4th of July is About, 26 Percent are Clueless
Yesterday, in the coffee shop of our building, I saw a sign that said it would be closed Monday in observance of the "Fourth of July Holiday." I asked one of the women that worked there if she knew the name of that "Fourth of July Holiday." I told her it was strange how many places don't even refer to the actual name any longer: Independence Day. I told her that I hoped the second independence day would be starting this coming November with America's declaring itself independent of an interfering, rapacious, over-taxing federal government.

The dumber they can keep citizens the easier to become a dictatorship.

This is a bad poll. We didn’t win anything on July 4, 1776. We were losing the war, and the Founding Fathers put a noose around their necks on July 4, 1776. A lot more than 26% of the people don’t realize the act of bravery that signing that document meant. The simpleton’s explanation that we “won” our independence on this day is an insult to what they really did.

I wish the “non-white” category were broken down into specifics.
Betcha the hispanic crew thinks we broke away from Mexico.
Notice also that ignorance is more pronounced in the southern states.
As a southerner, I can post that observation w/o brickbats being thrown at me, OK??
As a southerner whose children received excellent public school educations (no teachers’ unions in my state), I can also observe that ignorance can’t truly be blamed on the educational system, which, try as it might, has a monumental job overcoming generational ignorance and complacency. Ignorant parents breed ignorant children.
There are a lot of people in this country — and most aren’t descended from the founding colonists — who just don’t care.
Flame me, but I’m right. And I’m not a racist, just a realist.

And how many people knew that George Washington was a British Officer for many years and a member of the Anglican Church....As British as they come.
His British mentor, Lord Fairfax, on his deathbed, and hearing of the defeat of the British exclaimed: "My God....What have I done!"

That begs the question, From where do the latter think the U.S. achieved its independence? Among the countries mentioned are France, China, Japan, Mexico, and Spain. The ones who said Mexico, or China, are looking towards the future. [/cynic]

The ones that know best what the 4th of July is about are immigrants that went through the legal immigration process.
Have you ever talked to a legal immigrant on U.S. history? The test they are given to get citizenship is really tough.
