74% Americans Know What the 4th of July is About, 26 Percent are Clueless
Marist Poll ^ | 7/2/2010 | Marist Poll

Posted on 07/03/2010 8:21:40 AM PDT by Dallas59

There’s good news for American education. About three-quarters of residents — 74% — know the U.S. declared its independence from Great Britain in 1776. The bad news for the academic system — 26% do not. This 26% includes one-fifth who are unsure and 6% who thought the U.S. separated from another nation. That begs the question, “From where do the latter think the U.S. achieved its independence?” Among the countries mentioned are France, China, Japan, Mexico, and Spain.

Yesterday, in the coffee shop of our building, I saw a sign that said it would be closed Monday in observance of the "Fourth of July Holiday." I asked one of the women that worked there if she knew the name of that "Fourth of July Holiday." I told her it was strange how many places don't even refer to the actual name any longer: Independence Day. I told her that I hoped the second independence day would be starting this coming November with America's declaring itself independent of an interfering, rapacious, over-taxing federal government.

This is a bad poll. We didn’t win anything on July 4, 1776. We were losing the war, and the Founding Fathers put a noose around their necks on July 4, 1776. A lot more than 26% of the people don’t realize the act of bravery that signing that document meant. The simpleton’s explanation that we “won” our independence on this day is an insult to what they really did.

35% of non-white are clueless and 9% of them said some other country. 44% total non-white have no idea what the 4th of July is about.

"I told her that I hoped the second independence day would be starting this coming November with America's declaring itself independent of an interfering, rapacious, over-taxing federal government."

Yeah there's nothing that will win votes for conservative principles like obnoxiously shoving politics and ideology in someone's face while they are trying to go about their job.

I wish the “non-white” category were broken down into specifics.

Betcha the hispanic crew thinks we broke away from Mexico.

Notice also that ignorance is more pronounced in the southern states.

As a southerner, I can post that observation w/o brickbats being thrown at me, OK??

As a southerner whose children received excellent public school educations (no teachers’ unions in my state), I can also observe that ignorance can’t truly be blamed on the educational system, which, try as it might, has a monumental job overcoming generational ignorance and complacency. Ignorant parents breed ignorant children.

There are a lot of people in this country — and most aren’t descended from the founding colonists — who just don’t care.

Flame me, but I’m right. And I’m not a racist, just a realist.

The poll doesn’t appear to suggest that we “won” anything on July 4, 1776, just “declared.” It does, however, ask from which country we won independence, which was an historical eventuality looking forward from that date.

Yep, alot of it boils down to simply not caring.

And how many people knew that George Washington was a British Officer for many years and a member of the Anglican Church....As British as they come.

His British mentor, Lord Fairfax, on his deathbed, and hearing of the defeat of the British exclaimed: "My God....What have I done!"

I used to work with a very intelligent woman who had recently graduated from college. Somehow the subject of the American Revolution came up and it became obvious she had no clue as to which country we rebelled against, or when. She was a bit insulted by my reaction as it never occurred to me that anyone in this country wouldn’t know that, and I was shocked by her ignorance. She explained that she simply is not interested in American history. I explained I’m not interested in astronomy but I know what the moon is. Anyway, she’s a huge leftist from the SF Bay area. I suspect most of those completely ignorant about our history are leftist radicals, if they are involved in politics at all.

The ones who said Mexico, or China, are looking towards the future. [/cynic]
