Wait On Line To Show Your Costco Receipt Or You Will Be Assaulted

Let's say you're in a rush after buying a fan at Costco. You look past the line packed with people and carts and spy a lone employee standing by the exit. Do you walk over and show your receipt? What's the worst that could happen? Let's ask Reader Shay.

“ On June 23, 2010 at the [redacted] Costco Center at around 11am I made a quick stop in to return a couple items and to pick a fan. Both the returns process and the checkout went wonderfully as usual. It only took me 2 minutes to get in line and pay for the one item I had.

However when I reached the exit door there was a line of 8 people with baskets of stuff waiting to get out the door. So I went to the other door which does have exit illuminated above it and showed the lady standing there my receipt and one item. She shook her head at me and pointed at the line. When I started to walk out the exit anyways she grabbed a hold of my arm and told me to go to the other line. I told her that I was already running late and the line was moving very slowly, so I continued out the exit. At this point her hand slipped off of my arm and she grabbed a hold of my purse. The first time I politely asked her to let go of me, to which she promptly ignored me. So I continued to walk out the door as she still held onto my purse, eventually grabbing onto it with a second hand and began tugging it. I finally started yelling at her to let go of me when we were in front of the exit area (directly center to both entrances). Even after people started stopping and staring at us, She continued to tug on my purse and would not let go no matter how loud I yelled. She finally let go when I knocked her hands off of my purse with pretty reasonable force.

I was honestly pretty shaken up over this. I really couldn’t believe someone would do this in a public place especially an employee of that store. I sat in my car for about 5 minutes and calmed down. Then I had to find the number for Costco, because no where on my receipt does it list a phone number. I finally got a hold of the stores assistant manger and explained what had happened. He was polite and apologetic and end up meeting me in front of the store so I could point out who had done this to me. He said that he would speak with this Employee and that the Store Manger would call me when he came in.

True to his word the store manger did give me a call a few hours later. He once again apologized for the situation. I explained to what had happened and he confirmed that the statement that the employee had to fill out stated exactly what I had told him.

I have also mailed a letter to the regional manger letting him know exactly what happen as well. This should have never happen to me and I will continue writing to members of Costco Management, to ensure that this doesn’t happen to anyone else. There should be a Zero Tolerance Policy for this type of employee behavior. ”

I did read the above sentence, and it has no bearing on what I wrote to you. The customer showed her receipt to the employee. The employee refused to do her job, and then assaulted the customer. You blame the customer.

When I pay for a purchase, my transaction is done. What was the merchants is now mine by dint of the transaction. This POS store run by liberals has decided to add an extra step. You have to prove you paid for what you are taking out of the store after you have gone through checkout. Fine. They have decided they cater to criminals. Well, this woman wasn't a criminal. She actually bought what she was taking out of the store. She showed the receipt to the door Nazi. Door Nazi decided that wasn't good enough.

And then the door Nazi assaults the customer who owns the merchandise.

You side with the door Nazi.

So you have decided that it is okay to assault women as the leave a store with what they bought. WTF does that say about you?

If a shopkeeper has reason to believe you stole something, he has the right to detain you until the authorities get there. But here’s the rub: They have to suspect you not everyone who walks into their store.

We asked the stores about their receipt check policies.

Did the following stores lie?

Costco says the receipt check does work to reduce loss, while protecting both the store and customer. Wal-Mart told me it focuses its checks only on items not in a bag, a TV for instance and on items that set off the electronic alarm. Best Buy says its policy is to randomly check receipts and at times focus on particular items.

The only thing she did that wasn’t nice was refusing to get in line with the rest of the proles. She kind of gave them the bird. But that has nothing to do with the merchant.

She tried to exit through the entrance. If she doesent want to follow the rules of the membership which she AGREED to follow, then she should shop elsewhere.

Everything beyond that fact is just WHINING.. Oh, and I'm sure few personal injury lawyers would pick up her case (poor thing has a bruised purse !)

In other words, articulable suspicion. AKA probable cause in the legal world. Since this Costco couldn't use that standard, the manager wasn't too keen on what happened at the door.

She paid for the merchandise that she took out of the store. So the loss prevention protocol doesn't apply. If she chose to, the lawsuit would make her rich.

You’ve had to show your receipt to get out of Costco since day one, back when it was Price Club. This shouldn’t be news to this person, and if they were running late then maybe they shouldn’t have stopped.

You simply assumed

Many of us idiots, especially the congratulated idiots, use the word perhaps to mean maybe or possibly so it will not be mistaken for an assumption.

In addition, I thought you were quite clear in saying why the employee decided to grab you and you were quite clear that you knew exactly what you did to cause it.

That does not condone the employee's action but it does point out your responsibility in the matter. I suggest you accept your responsibility lest someone mistaken you for an idiot, perhaps without a congratulation.

The article states that the door had an exit sign above it. So guess what? Your argument is invalid. You are grasping at straws. She showed her receipt to the employee at one of the doors. She followed the agreement.

She was assaulted. Battery occured. Now you might want to justify some twit attacking a legitimate customer, but this American doesn’t. So where does that leave you?

And have you seen some of the injury photos of a woman who has had her purse removed from her shoulder forcibly? The bruising can be horrific. Again, you seem to support this. Why?

It has 100% bearing. You assume that this was that persons job, just because she was standing by the door. The other eight people in line weren’t running to the other door, now were they???

How do you know? Isn’t Costco union? Maybe she was from a different department and had clocked out waiting for a friend?? You don’t know any of that!

All I know is— there is a policy. When you shop there, you KNOW that’s the kind of BS you have to deal with in a Costco.

She signed up for this:
“Costco [PDF, pg 14]: “To ensure that all members are correctly charged for the merchandise purchased, all receipts and merchandise will be inspected as you leave the warehouse.”

You and I will differ on our opinion of Costco. We find that with proper planning it's an excellent place to save some serious money, especially in their meat department.

We use it to add to our supply of bulk staples for the coming hard times. It's hard to beat their prices on those items.

And we've always had excellent service at our local store. Believe me we've also seen Divas like this woman who consider them selves far too important to follow the regular, well posted, and agreed upon procedures. As I said in my first reply to you I think part of the Membership Agreement should be that other shoppers be allowed to administer a righteous beat down to people who act like this.

Ahhh, Bravo Sierra! And that is the kindest thing that can be said about that crap you just posted.

You are trying to justify the assault of a customer who paid for her purchase. So you use the communist reasoning that it ‘wasn’t her job as she stood at the door’. Commiecutter? Thats your handle? You do do know that the unions are communist fronts, yes?

Did I miss the part where she couldn’t wait in line with the other customers becuase she was rushing out to the parking lot to give CPR to the endearing old grandpa while she helped the labrador retriever deliver all those cute lil’ puppies?

Good one! Actually after the "rush" she goes and sits in her car for 5 minutes - so the CPR thing was obviously out...
