USA v Algeria 10am EDT
USA win, they are in!
It was clear Algeria was just playing for a tie to screw the US.
Wrong, actually they needed a win too to advance, and actually got caught attacking, which allowed the US to score the goal. Give credit to Algeria, they were playing to win.
It was clear Algeria was just playing for a tie to screw the US.
That is a great point. I guess better kicking the ball at each other and throwing epithats than bullets, hee hee.
Indeed, despite the best efforts of the officials.
When there are only 1 or two goals a game, a bad call on a goal directly affects the outcome of the game in a way that just doesn't happen that often in American sports.
Saying "that's just the way the game is" won't cut it for American fans.
Perhaps the rest of the world is content to settle for mediocrity; American aren't.
Every game I've watched in this tournament has been decided by an apparent bad call.
I liked Donovans dive on the endline. Reminded me of Bobby Orr’s dive in 1970 after winning Stanley Cup.
Are you shure?
Because i have not seen a single comment about the horrible referees (and they have been horrible) since the US has won,
So it looks like your fellow countrymen just prove you wrong ;-)
btw. bitching and losing the last nerves because of the referees is about as old as football (soccer).
And is a part of this sport!
greetings
Likewise. It was on the big screen in the cafeteria here.
Dreamer. But wouldn't that be a great final!
Oh no, the referees (and assistants) have been pretty horrible in the tournament overall, and Team USA has had more than its share of bad calls against. They just managed to overcome it this time.
Uh. Did you watch this one?

I took an actual lunch break today (I rarely do so) to go watch the second half in the neighboring buffet/grill. By the end of the match, there were about 30 of us groaning, sighing, and eventually cheering.
it would be AWESOME, especially as I’m in the USA at the time :-)
“It was clear Algeria was just playing for a tie to screw the US.”
Don’t be so paranoid my friend. Keeping it tight and looking for a sneak goal is what Algeria have been doing all tournament.
I think you are exaggerating somewhat. Most games do not have a bad referee decision influencing the game.
However, you are partly right. It isn’t a typical American game. The good guys don’t always win. You can be the best and occasionally lose. You can have a terrible referee call that makes you mad. You can have the most possession and best overall stats and still not be the best team.
All this confuses “some” American sports fans, but I have never been one to blame it on the American psyche - as if the Homo Americanus cannot get the game.
I think THIS game today shows what it’s all about. There is hardly another cathartic and emotional outburst in other games. It’s a great feeling and I think Americans do cut it, will cut it and will get better as the decades go on.
Yep very true! But this was my point.
Since the US has won no one has said just a single
world about the referees because people are just happy.
Of course if the US had lost this would be totally different. As said to hate referees and their calls is part of this sport!
Hehehehe...
Reffing should not be the reason someone wins or loses in any sport, and in soccer it happens way too often.
Switzerland ripped.
Germany ripped
Us ripped twice
Multiple others.
It's a disgrace.
BTW, I was robbed of another win in my NCAA pool this year when Baylor was robbed by a BS charging call late in their game against Doook. (I was 6-0 picking double digit seeds early, and Baylor over Doook was my late "upset" pick which surely would have put me on top probably without even needing any more points from the final four.) But I guess stupid calls and stupid rules and a zillion time-outs is okay, huh?

Did you miss the call in 1st minutes? US goal called off. Replay showed US was was 2 feet offsides. Refs made correct call.
