I don’t have any liriope; I just used to see it used as edging in Houston. I got the pictures off the web. As I remember, it likes part sun, part shade — like Hosta, but I could be wrong about that. The idea that deer don’t like it appeals to me. I have a steep slope too; nothing except weeds has ever done well there.
I meant to add CONGRATS on the new house.
Great to hear you made it to Houston! Are you there now?
No, drove back to Mobile last night after spending the day there with the home inspection guy, pest control guy, and the alarm system inspector. Was out there last weekend also, looking at houses and made an offer on this one and it was accepted within hours. Wont be moving till Aug. We have met some neighbors and explored the area’s businesses. Only problem is not enough sunny area to veggie garden. May have to remove a couple of trees on the back of the property to let the sun in. But we wanted a country enviroment, and we got it.
I am glad you are here. A big storm blew through here (Missouri) today and knocked down ALL of my sweet corn (4to5ft tall). Is there any way I can save it?
Thanks, we looked at several hundred houses on the Houston MLS site over the last several months. Our needs(or our wants) in a house were many. We both like to garden/landscape and I am determind to raise veggies. My wife also does stained glass and sewing, and I like classic cars, so we needed (wanted) extra facilities for our interest. It was very hard to fit all needs(desires) but we hit it at about 98% and under budget, too!
Thanks. I’m hoping she doesn’t eat the figs.
Liriope?! Ahhh! I broke a pitchfork trying to thin it for a client.
My grandmother told me years ago to plant marigolds in amongst the tomatoes to protect them from the rampages of unwanted critters.
Don’t know if there is any scientific rhyme or reason why this should help but I can tell you that I’ve never seen a bug or a worm on my tomatoes and I’ve been heeding grandma’s advice for some 30 years.

Congratulations on your enthusiasm and the deal with the cancer.

I catch Japanese Beetles, the wide bodies of the garden. Sometimes I can even get them to fly into a sandwich bag where I keep a good little supply of Sevin dust. They sure are pokey fliers. You’d think I’d have something better to do.
We use Liquid Fence. Works like a charm for deer, squirrels, and rabbits. It’s a bit pricey but you don’t have to use it very often and it works! We’ve gotten it as Menards and True Value. Runs about $14 a quart, if memory serves me right. But I only have to buy a couple of quarts per summer.

Thanks. I should give it a try. Critter Ridder doesn’t seem to last long. Some darn cat has been spraying the containers.
Hmmm...depends upon how wet the soil still is, and if the corn will stand up straight on its own. I guess you could stake it with some bamboo poles for the time being? If the root system wasn’t pulled completely out of the ground and damaged too much, and the sun shines a lot from here on out, you might be able to save it. *SHRUG*
Never came across that particular problem in my ‘gardening travels’ to date, LOL! :)
Use your feet to compress the soil into the roots after you stand them up and also hill some soil up over the roots if it is loose enough...
I still have volunteer Holly Hocks coming up in our garden that I got from my mother 35 or more years ago that she had planted many many years before. Some doubles and some singles but alas they suffer from Rust here...
We have rusty hollyhocks here some years, too. I’m surprised they’re doing so well this year with all the rain and such variation in temperatures.
All of mine are volunteers too, from a package of Seed Savers hollyhocks I planted about 10 years ago!
My “hockers” haven’t bloomed yet, but they come up in the strangest places. One volunteer is 7 feet up by our deck and peeking through the steps with leaves.
Just wondering, have you heard anything from Gabz? I miss that girl!
