Leonardo DiCaprio Set For J Edgar Hoover Role In Biopic For Eastwood And Grazer
Deadline.com ^ | 06/17/2010 | NIKKI FINKE AND MIKE FLEMING

"He going to spread his wings," one of my studio sources tells me now that Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play J Edgar Hoover in the still untitled biopic. Already getting early Oscar buzz for Chris Nolan's Inception, Leo will be directed in the epic FBI drama by Clint Eastwood who's producing with Brian Grazer and Rob Lorenz through Imagine and Malpaso. Scripted by Dustin Lance Black, production begins later this year. The project began at Universal, where Imagine is based, but came together at Warners, where Eastwood's Malpaso has long called home. Imagine had been developing the Dustin Lance Black script for over a year before showing it to Universal, where the reaction was negative. But then Grazer got the screenplay to pal Clint (they did The Changeling and have had a personal relationship ever since), the two men met about it in mid-February, and the film has been on the fast track at Warner Bros, where this will be DiCaprio's first film with Eastwood. Great that DiCaprio is getting out of his Marty Scorsese rut.

I can only imagine the hit-piece this is going to be, but it's a good sign that Black is no longer the script writer.

For people who are movie buffs, you might recognize the name of the screenwriter "Dustin Lance Black", as the same person who won the Oscar for the "Milk" screenplay a couple years ago. Given that movie's agenda, coupled with the fact that Black is an outspoken homosexual, I can only imagine how he treated the rumors of Hoover's predilections for women's clothes, which may be the reason for the switch to Clint Eastwood, who can still be a pretty liberal screenwriter himself, despite being a self-described Republican.

Played by di caprio - well that keeps the “fag” meme going that the KGB-inspired left has been pushing.

LOL! They give DiCaprio the strangest roles.

Whoopie Goldberg or Jackie Chan would make almost as much sense for this role.

Or is this "J. Edgar Hoover - The High School Freshman Years"?

The only person in that cast of characters I would single out is Brian Grazer. He is the prototypical example of someone with money who sets out to purchase an image for himself. And that image is “genius”, and it’s only an image. No mater how hard he tries.

This is a GAG, right? And what would be next? Maybe Pauley Shore playing Rick in a Casablanca remake??!! Barney Frank instead of Errol Flynn as Robin Hood? Woody Allen as the next Patton?

Not sure what Leo has in common with the others in acting ability, other than you apparently don’t like any of them.

While the left loves portraying gay folk as the best thing since sliced bread, they will no doubt portray J Edgar Hoover as a “Scum of the earth, repressed, closeted, self-hating homosexual, etc etc...”.

Funny how they claim they are gay friendly unless they want to demonize someone then they use the “ghey is bad” argument. And the Gay community just looks the other way...

Leo doesn’t exactly slum it with directors.

I don't know what his reason would be for the comparisons he mentioned, but mine would be the fact that they would all be miscast in those rolls, just like DiCaprio is miscast here.

DiCaprio may be a capable actor, but he's not believable in the role of Hoover. He just doesn't have the gravitas or stature as a person, not to mention age.

For this movie to work, you'd have to have someone like a Frank Langella, Christopher Plummer or Max Von Sydow, but a generation younger. I'm not exactly sure who that would be, but I know it's not DiCaprio.

DiCaprio is a good actor, but they cast him in absurd roles. Scorcese especially. I'm missing the part where he convinces me he's some fearsome badass.

Gangs of New York for example. Daniel Day Lewis can put some fear into you in a role. DiCaprio is like a chick with a little knife.

Outside of Hollywood, there's nobody who wouldn't smack him upside the head if he ever so much as spoke loudly to them.

Woody Allen as Patton...

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

that has possibilities..

George C Scott did leave the character with an unfinished polish...

Woody will surely supply that...

;)

Not at all. You'd have to go back a ways until you got to a movie that he was in that wasn't directed by an Oscar winner. Plus, he's been in some of the most coveted roles of the last decade.

I may be in the minority, but I’m willing to give DeCaprio a chance.

I thought he was very good as Howard Hughes in “The Aviator”. There are many actors with much less talent (Tom Cruise, anyone).

Does anybody know for sure if the cross dressing rumors about Hoover are true?

I would almost promise there will be at least one scene where he'll be wearing a dress or women's underwear.
