Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scotts background comes from running the Womens Tennis Association, not working as a college administrator. College athletics is generally run by lifers, folks who came up through the system and learned the same way to think and manage the same way.

i suspect this is just a stopgap for a year or two.
Good story.
It explains a lot.
Problem is there are only so many conferences, TV networks, and other schools to jerk around in this kind of deal. Those who have been paying attention will see this coming next time.
Rumor is it is a long term deal...at least 7-8 years.
Then Texas may go independent. They used the PAC 16gazillion and the rest of the Big 12 like a kleenex to get what they really wanted, their own Texas regional network owned by the Longhorns. They get a conference they can really dominate now, got rid of that pesky championship game and they got half the schools to thank them for it. Also aTm, Tech and OU continue to follow Texas around like obedient little puppies.
The only person who saw through them was Tom Osbourne and Nebraska. Good for them.
I’m having some conflicting loyalty today, so I’ll just say that you just proved that it doesn’t take many words to tell the truth.
i suspect this is just a stopgap for a year or two.
Agreed.
This is far from over.
No big 12 title games will mean less money.
ping
No conference title games made the Pac 10 and Big 10 lesser conferences.
I suspect the Big 12 will add teams to replace Colorado and Nebraska. The WAC and Mid-American might be good places to go for additional teams.
IF the Big-12 is smart they will approach TCU and SMU to join. Make an all Texas South division and move Oklahoma and OSU to the north with Kansas, K state, Iowa State, and Mizzu.
I still find it amusing though that the Big-10 now has 12 teams and the Big-12 has 10.
Except that the package as it is means a BUTTLOAD more money than they had with the big 12 title game. So less is more.
This was Texas’ plan all along. They played the Pac-10 like a fiddle.
I don’t think so. It just means more teams to share the money with.
In fact, I think that was part of the idea from Texas’ perspective, they knew Nebraska wanted to leave, and Colorado as well.
So it’s a win-win, a bigger TV contract, and fewer teams to have to share it with.
The Big 11? conference is now much weaker. That means Texas can beat the crap out of all of them and still have a hard time with those computer rankings.
So the Big 10 and Pac 10 have 11 members, and the Big 12 has 10 members. The leagues should change their names.
Forgot about Colorado...Big 10.
I figure they’ll just get Corporate Sponsors for the conference names, like the “American Airlines Conference” or somesuch.
They will need to realign the teams since Nebraska and Colorado were in the same division. I still believe the Big 12 will add more teams to replace the two that left. I would to like to see them add Utah and perhaps BYU. It would add two good football and basketball teams.
Or they could just go ‘old school’ and do away with divisions.
