Good morning gardeners! Wow June is here already. I hope all of your gardens are flourishing. Can you believe that last year at this time there were freeze and frost warnings for the North, Northeast and some of the higher elevations? This year the freeze warnings seem to be contained within a certain household in Tennessee. I just had to say that, couldn’t help myself!

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

If you have a question about gardening or just an observation to share please feel free to stop by and participate. There are no stupid questions, just honest ones.

Do you have any roses? If you do, do you have to constantly wage war against black spot? What side of Houston?
I do have roses, lots of them. I am in the SE part of the city, inside the loop, about 1 mile west of Reliant stadium, in a neighborjhood called Westridge ("Just behind the Starbucks on Main" I tell folks, and they immediatley ID it). I inherited the roses when we bought the house, and do not give them a lot of care, although I augment their soil with gypsum every so often to make the soil acidic when the leaves look to be hurting. Now that I think about it, the leaves DO have black spots, but my other plants take priority (my peaches are ready, and I had to cover the tree with netting to keep the squirrels from eating all of them. The result, though, is rotting fruit stuck in the net, which I hafta remove by hand: yuck!).

I almost forgot. You can make your planting and stacking a lot easier if you cut away about 1/2 of the sidewall down to the rim opening. You can do this by drilling a hole in the side and cutting with a Sawzall® (reciprocating saw) or a jigsaw. I have even used lopping shears in a pinch (but it’s a lot of work).

The Cherokee Purple tomato that I dug up last fall and put into a container and moved inside just before it dropped to 20F has two tomatoes that are almost ripe and three more that are green.

Last year rabbits ate my beans down to the ground, excluding one they did not touch. I assumed the beans were gone, but nope- they rebounded and then had the second assault. Been flea beetles went through the leaves like a dose of salts.

Being slow to get things done on my part, they sat there for awhile, the lower leaves just riddled. However, those leaves remained as they were the rest of the season and the beans (pole) just kept on going. I had more beans than I could can/use when it was said and done.

I read somewhere the rabbits liked the tender sweet leaves which may be why they had one salad bar and then never touched them again.

We are looking at the NW side of town, to be near my wife’s job location.
We fight an ongoing war on blackspot here on the Alabama gulf coast. We were not sure whether to dig up the roses and take them with us or not. Wife loves roses, I prefer lower maintanance plants myself. I would like to plant some trees, pear, lemon, and satsuma.

Jung Seeds remains very good. I ordered two grapes - the Edelwiess took off like a rocket. The Concord was fine initially, but then appeared deader than a doornail. After 5 weeks I called Jung’s. No hesitation they gave me a credit for it, as they had no more Concord grapes left.

A bit later I got a letter confirming the credit for the dead grape.

So then me, being a bit of a procrastinator-had not gotten around to taking out the dead grape. When I did look again, it had done its thing and had good healthy leaves growing.

Which brings me to another point. I often tell people just leave “it” alone, whatever “it” is. So many times, given time- something will take its own sweet time- and then what you can not see underground, all of a sudden bursts forth above ground and viola- the “dead” is no longer dead.

And yes I wrote a note to Jung to tell them to remove my credit.

My daughter ordered strawberries from Jung- they died. She decided she had planted them too deeply-and she did not ask for a refund. she figured she had learned something about gardening in the process.

When I was a young masochist we would take the Black Point cutoff on our way to FResno to visit family and friends. Now we take hiway 20 to Williams and pray I catch 99 in Sacramento and not end up in Reno. A FReeper told me the correct way to go but I haven’t tried it yet as we’re waiting for a new car from a company I own a stake in...

Your not that far behind me..I also live in Ga. East of Atlanta. I just got my tomatoes in about 2 weeks ago, pole beans coming up nicely, cucumbers, and peppers. My crook neck squash died, so I went and got more, will plant tomorrow. Also i am going to start some carrots in a large container. Just repotted my basil.

It’s nothing like 299 between Eureka and Redding or even worse is 36 between Fortuna and Red Bluff.

I must have slept through it because I noticed the rain gauge had 1” in it and I had emptied it yesterday at 7AM. My dog handler said the dog food dish had a lot of water in it from last night.

I picked up 5 bags of cheap ACE potting soil for filler in the bottom of some deep planters plus 20 1.5 cu-ft bags of good Black Gold potting soil for my live-in gardener...
