Great way to learn Capitals and States
25 May 2010 | mind frees

As I have become more aware of how conservative I am, I have had more of a desire to learn the history of our country. I am not ashamed to admit that I had NO idea where any state was located, especially since I used this website and now know all 50 states locations and their capitals. I am definitely going to make sure that I do this with my kids and I just wanted to pass this on so we can ALL educate our children and teach them the real history of our country. God Bless

Last night, my 8 year old God Daughter called me to tell me all about a report she did for school. They had to pick a state and write a report about it. Figuring, the way the schools are she did a 2 line ‘my friend lives in Colorado’ etc, I asked her the state nickname & flower.(I don’t know these things,LOL) She told me them. She was very excited about the report and said she used the internet to do it.
Now seeing this post and thinking of her excitement, I am going to order her a globe for her & her sister to use to study and see where places are. I am very proud of her and want her to stay interested in school and learning. She’s in FL and from what I get, the school system sucks. It’s up to the families to pick up the slack. Her parents aren’t to swift in the learning/attention dept., so I try to keep them (the girls) going in different learning directions. I am currently paying for them to be Girl Scouts and they love it.
Families were and are still the key to kids learning. You can’t leave it up to the schools. It’s bad enough they are going to grow up knowing a totally different world than most of us did. That’s sad.

Games are a great way to learn. My kids learned them from USA place mats. I put them on the table and curiosity did the rest. FYI, I’ve also used World Map, U.S. Presidents, Solar System, and U.S. Monetary System place mats. They’re great conversation starters, even with adults.

Wow - that brings back a fun memory — we had one of those shower curtains too. Does anyone still sell those do you know?

Thanks for the link.
A lot of great games on the site.
I’d rather have the kids spend time there than on Facebook.

. I was born and raised in Long Island NY.

Oh, I can understand the lack of geography knowlege of a New Yorker. :-)

I think they are still available on-line...but while looking I came across something almost as much fun!

The "Psycho" shower curtain and bath mat!!!

I LOVE Sheppard Software!! A kindergarten teacher at a campus where I used to teach emailed us all a link and told us a little about it. I was hooked the first time I visited the site! I have been using it for several years now. They have added so much since the early days.

I’ve always been into maps and atlases, but having the interactive games and audible pronunciations really makes it great, especially with Africa and Asia. It may sound silly, but I was so tickled the day I learned he name of every country in Africa AND could put them each in the correct place on an outlineless map! It was actually fun to learn them that way!

So funny that you mentioned Sheppard Software... I was just thinking about Burkina Faso, of all places, this morning. Weird. :)

A friend's dad was lecturing him on his grades in Chemistry once, saying that he(the dad) had done well in it. The friend retorted "Yeah, but back then there were only 4 elements." Meaning earth, air, fire, and water....

At one time in my life, I could give you routes from one end of the country to the other, which states (in order) the route would take, and for the most part could tell you the miles across the state on that route. Thankfully, I've had some help with that and only revert to my full nerd self on occasion. Usually when inebrated invertebrated intoxshicated drunk.

Well, from there, adding Alaska and Hawaii is easy. My maps show them to be island states southwest of Texas... ;-)

Your mind must have been reeeealy locked up somewhere. You’d never looked at a road map?

About 30 years ago, a NYer asked my Dad if they had paved roads in Kansas City, MO. He wasn’t joking, either.
