Weirdest. Accident. EVER.
Me | 05/21/2010 | By Lazamataz

So, I'm coming home from work -- I bike home from work --and I stumble across an accident. It is the single weirdest thing I have ever seen. A car managed to climb up the guide wires of a telephone pole.

It was next to a TitleMax, so I assumed at first glance that it was some sort of promotional advertisement. I rode my bike right behind it, without realizing the danger of the situation. When the cop saw me, he waved me off.

Now, what I'm thinking is: WTF, and apparantly the cop is too. HOW do you MANAGE this one???? HOW do you explain THIS to GEICO????

Man, it takes one extra special kind of stupid to pull a stunt like that one.

Those wires made a good barrier. It looks like there was minimal damage to the car, far less than if the car had hit the telephone pole.

I wonder if angled wire barriers would be useful at racetracks.

I don't know - at racing speeds, they're libel to slide right up the wire, over the top of the pole, and down on the crowd below!

Heheh...I ripped the driver's side door off my minivan, took out a concrete mailbox and crashed the car backwards into a brick wall in an accident once.

I thought I forgot to lock the front door and jumped out of the car to check--with the car still in reverse gear. When the medicine bottle says "Use care when operating a car or dangerous machinery"--they MEAN it! The van was 2mos old and I still drive it. My husband freaked out a little.

The important question is, did the driver finish her phone conversation?

I was heading for work the other morning and I could see cop lights up the road a bit. When I got to the edge of town there was a jacked up Dodge pickup and a cop car coming at me down off the side of the road, my side, heading for me. So I pull over and stop. There is a train track running alongside and this guy is going up the train track embankment, back down toward the road, but the cop is blocking him. He sorta jumps the tracks so his driver’s side wheels are across the first rail running parallel and he stops. The cop comes FLYING out and over to the driver’s side of the pickup. He has so much adrenaline going he is jumping 5 feet in the air and swinging his stick trying to break the window. But he is jumping so high he is hitting the top of the truck. Ima thinking this is WAY to frantic for 6 in the morning. Found out later the guy was having a medical problem and was unable to control his vehicle. Too bad the cop didn’t initially know that, as high as he was jumping...

A friend of mine lives on a dead-end street and it’s lined with pine trees where the road ends. Some drunk person drove their car into the tree and it had this same config when it stopped—front wheels were off the ground. Of course, the passengers abandoned the vehicle after their 2am mishap.

Depends how long the wires are, where the crowd is, speed at impact, etc. Some of the forward momentum would be spent by the car's climbing the wires, and the wires could be set to start slipping or stretching at a certain tension to absorb the rest of the impact. The impact would be distributed mostly over the underside of the car, which sounds good for safety. Perhaps the wires could be connected to be more like a net, so the car couldn't fall through.

Just an idea.

I’ve actually seen the same thing happen, though the one I saw hadn’t climbed quite so high.

That wire saved the driver from potential serious injuries as the car would probably have just hit the pole.
