The bubble-wrap bride who knew exactly what to wear
UK DailyMail ^ | May 17, 2010 | Daily Mail Reporter

Traditionally a bride wears something old, new, borrowed and blue. But when Rachael Robinson got married it was simply a case of something recycled.

For the 30-year-old primary school deputy headteacher wore a dress made of bubble wrap when she tied the knot with Duncan Turner, 32.

As well as not costing her anything, anytime she got nervous during the ceremony she could pop a few bubbles to release the tension.

The dress used up 13ft of the packing material and was put together last month by pupils and parents at her school for a fashion show featuring recyclable materials.

That fairy looks much better than most of the ones I see around town.

Maybe if I put some bubble wrap under my pillow?

Actually, that looks fairly tasteful. I bet it made a heck of a racket as she walked down the aisle, but as someone else here noted, I’ve seen designs costing thousands that looked a lot worse. And for those criticizing the couples’ looks, you’ve been reading too many “People” magazines. This is what ordinary people look like. Not everyone is an overstyled, airbrushed wannabe-hollywood type. Indeed, a big part of most wedding picture packages is the “manipulation” performed by the photographer on the bride’s image before the prints are made: airbrushing, slenderizing, color manipulation, facial feature manipulation, etc etc.

The spoons are for the groom... he’ll hold one in each hand and shield his eyes later tonight... until she turns out the light in the hotel room.

I think their behavioral pattern thus far indicates they'll be sleeping out in the woods in a tent, not in a hotel room.

One other stereotype of note in the article ...

English teeth

For most Britons, the teeth aren’t particularly uncared for, they just don’t have the hangups we do about perfectly straight, overwhitened teeth. Unless it’s a real disaster, they tend not to go for straightening.

Bubble wrap turned 50 years old this past January. She’s looking good for her age! LOL!

Not alien, they just don’t consider it as important. It helps to realize that we here in the U.S. have developed a severely distorted view of what a healthy human looks like over the past 30 years or so, thanks to advertising and entertainment imagery. Marketers have closely studied human habits and characteristics to more carefully tailor campaigns for effectiveness. To wit: humans look for certain characteristics to determine if a mate is healthy, those being certain body proportions, coloration, hair quality, soundness of teeth, all of which can be indicators of bodily health. Marketers have over time exaggerated these elements to increase our reactions to their ads, by artificially whitening the teeth of spokespersons, enhancing their hair color, carefully manipulating clothing colors and body shape, all to convince us to react more positively. Hollywood uses the same technique to increase the purported beauty of their stars. With regard to teeth, we’re conditioned to look for someone who has all their teeth, and that they aren’t too discolored. These are indicators that the person is getting a healthy diet. Marketers just take it further, by whitening teeth beyond any natural shade, and artificially straightening them beyond anything nature could ever do. Over time, seeing this kind of thing constantly, we begin to think it’s the norm, and that anyone who doesn’t look like that is somehow inferior. Modern technology has made it possible for even ordinary shlubs to get hollywood teeth. Britain has somehow avoided that particular fetish, and therefore have more realistic teeth.

How did I know that one or the other of them would be wearing those stupid-looking faux-intelligent square glasses?

Someone should tell libs that it's far better to be smart, than to look smart.

I’m sorry, but they are one of the ugliest couples I’ve ever seen.

And the dress doesn’t help!!

well i have to say the dress is not hideous. it’s actually kinda neat. the bride and groom on the other hand are a pair of charm free eco-idiots. but, dang, you gotta love being able to pop bubble wrap at a wedding. overall i give the whole affair a 7.5. (mostly for the fun factor)

Even the royals and the TV stars have ugly teeth, and they can certainly afford to have them done privately, even if the NHS doesn’t cover it.

They just don’t see it as being all that unattractive. My English mother-in-law thought it was ridiculous that we had the kids get braces. She honestly didn’t think there was anything wrong with their teeth. Yet, my kids’ overbites were bad enough that in Britain they probably would have got orthodontia paid for by the NHS.

Not to get off topic, but does it ever seem that the ugly people stayed in Britain?

Now you;ve gone and done it!

Cue the Helen Thomas photos.

Satisfied? :-)
