So the concept of Porcelain Veneers is alien to them?

Not alien, they just don’t consider it as important. It helps to realize that we here in the U.S. have developed a severely distorted view of what a healthy human looks like over the past 30 years or so, thanks to advertising and entertainment imagery. Marketers have closely studied human habits and characteristics to more carefully tailor campaigns for effectiveness. To wit: humans look for certain characteristics to determine if a mate is healthy, those being certain body proportions, coloration, hair quality, soundness of teeth, all of which can be indicators of bodily health. Marketers have over time exaggerated these elements to increase our reactions to their ads, by artificially whitening the teeth of spokespersons, enhancing their hair color, carefully manipulating clothing colors and body shape, all to convince us to react more positively. Hollywood uses the same technique to increase the purported beauty of their stars. With regard to teeth, we’re conditioned to look for someone who has all their teeth, and that they aren’t too discolored. These are indicators that the person is getting a healthy diet. Marketers just take it further, by whitening teeth beyond any natural shade, and artificially straightening them beyond anything nature could ever do. Over time, seeing this kind of thing constantly, we begin to think it’s the norm, and that anyone who doesn’t look like that is somehow inferior. Modern technology has made it possible for even ordinary shlubs to get hollywood teeth. Britain has somehow avoided that particular fetish, and therefore have more realistic teeth.
