"General Robert E. Lee was, in my estimation, one of the supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. He believed unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which until 1865 was still an arguable question in America. . ."

“So you agree with the contention that losing at the ballot box is justification for armed rebellion?”
It may come to that again, don’t you think? If demographics in thie country caused by massive immugration both legal and illegal into this country from third world countries, along with MSM leftist bias and voter fraud, leads to changing this country into a socialist/commie state, what do you plan on doing? Just watch it happen until it is a fait accompli? Or armed rebellion to try to save America from it’s internal enemies. Which is it?
“Wrong. There are many scholarly (that is, written by other than elitist Yankee oligarch university professors) works, which document the history of increasing selective tariffs on export products of the South. The major one being cotton, exported to Englands factories vs. northern textile mills. ... Through tariffs they were strangling the producers, and the Southern producing class had the means to secede, and did so to get away from these oligarchs.”
Bingo. You are exactly right. The primary basis for the Civil War, IMHO. Slavery was indeed an important issue, just not the primary one.
That was too funny!
I had not a single clue as to what you were talking about, and it was so out of right-field (we don’t use the term ‘left field’ here) that I couldn’t even figure out what to write back. When I read my post now, it looks to me like I am hemming and hawing, because I wanted to say something thoughtful in reply.
I had to go to Wikipedia to find out what it was, now I am going to have to watch a few episodes.
It made me literally feel like I was living under a rock. We have never had cable, and I stopped watching television beginning around 1994, trailing off to the point now where I might have 15 minutes of television a month, if that.
Apart from NFL Football, my only exposure to television is when I walk through a room or bar and stop. I do make an exception when I go to hotels, there I will surf all 500 channels incessantly until 2 AM, when I realize that it is 500 channels of rubbish, and the only thing worth watching was the history channel, military channel or National Geographic (until they start with Global Warming)
If you are interested, check out this thread I started on April 27th after my wife and I came back from a week in Arizona. We were in Phoenix that Friday when the immigration bill was passed:

I had forgotten just how incredibly biased the media are, and your pointing to these cartoons I had no conception of made me realize how different my perception of the outside world is than a lot of people I know.
It made me understand that when I watch television now...I really watch it. I don’t just kick back and absorb it. ((shudder))
In any case, thanks for those links.
Histeria was pretty good stuff overall. There was plenty of good natured parody to all types.
I know all too well what you are referring to with regards to network sNews. I gave up on it years ago as well, only seeing it in video clips or when visiting.
Now it reminds me of 1984 (the '84 version with John Hurt ;-) They aren't quite that over the top but so close that all it'll take is a nudge.
I prefer to read and listen to "Hate Talk Radiotm...
Yeah. I am currently bouncing around between Podcasts of Rush Limbagh, Mark Levin, my second listen to Thomas Sowell’s “Intellectuals and Society”, and a new book I just downloaded tonight called “How Evil Works” that sounds really good (recommended to me by another Freeper...:)
It was a real shock to me to actually listen to what the News media is pumping out on a daily basis.
Don’t need an economic lecture. Slaves were labor capital in those days and legally considered property. Not saying this was right, but this forms the basis for the “reparations” crowd who will gladly jump on any bandwagon regardless of their heritage. Any comparison of the economic systems of north vs. south has to attribute slavery in the “GDP” if you will. Later, of course, we all became wage slaves to the oligarchs- those who couldn’t hang on to our family businesses. Have no respect at all for unionists and progressives. They are still at it, enslaving us all.
So, how long do we fight these progressive loonies before we work on seceding again? They want us to be starved, they control the money and the value of it. Can’t we just stop playing with them and let them dry in the wind?
The problem with academics is eventually you run out of other peoples minds. It ain’t all in the books, or in the tainted minds of the oligarch’s professors. Some of us have actual family history to refer to.
Been down this before elsewhere. No time to engage further. No Princetonian scholar can trump what is KNOWN by those who did not re-write history but rather lived it. I am saddened that what is left of this country is being run by the inheritors of Yankee progressive oligarchs and their internationalist banker pals. Such a waste.
See League of the South.
I’m just looking for some of those scholarly works that say the South rebelled over tariffs on their exports. I assumed you could point us all to some.
Slavery was the “irreconcilable difference” that split the North and the South. All the other issues could of been resolved through the political process in place. To ignore that basic fact in an attempt to rewrite history to fit a current political doctrine is silly. That slavery was the root cause of the US Civil War in no way invalidates the current arguments over the 10th Amendment and State Sovereignty.
This is one of the reasons I quit the History profession. This constant attempt to use history to justify current political dogmas. It is wrong when the Left does it, it is equally wrong when those on the Right do it.
The facts are the facts, that they do not fit a current political dogma of this or that political faction is irrelevant.
I suggest you all quit trying to revise history to justify your current political opinions
In a way, your statement is also an indictment of "Ike".
At least ask the correct question, there are enough Neo-Yankee warmongers around here.
He was right the first time.
Go for it. Let us all know how it works out for you.
Only a blood thirsty boot licking fascist Federalist dictatorial statist connects violence with the simple act of leaving.
Only a simple-minded, kool-aid guzzling, Lost Cause fanatic ignores the fact that there was no violence connected with 'the simple act of leaving' until the confederacy chose to initiate it by bombarding Sumter.
A whore house(Federal Govt.) has a troublsome prostitute(South Carolina) that wants to leave and become a respectable human being(secession). Blocking the exit(Charleston Harbor) is a big fat idiot bouncer(Ft. Sumter). At first, she tries to negotiate(verified in the 2nd inaug) with the madam(Lincoln) for freedom. The prostitute, not intimidated, pushes(bombards) the bouncer out of the way.
Only a brain-dead idiot could come up with an asinine analogy like that. IMHO, of course.
Where's the part where the hooker owes the pimp for debts run up and where the hooker is trying to leave with property belonging to her and the pimp?
