Bill Gates chucks cash at climate cooling cloud creator

Boffins want to curb climate change by building a $7bn fleet of 1,900 ships to crisscross the oceans as each sucks up ten tons of seawater per second and blasts it a kilometer into the sky to create clouds to absorb sunlight and cool the earth.

And Bill Gates is funding them. No, really.

The Times Online reports that a San Francisco research group with the cloudy name of Silver Lining has received $300,000 from the billionaire mosquito terrorist and tiny-nuke pusher to fund research into the aforementioned geoengineering project.

The Times notes that the US and UK scientists involved in the project witnessed the wimpiness of climate change–fighting agreements (or lack of same) coming out of last year's Copenhagen conference, and decided that it'd be global seppuku to wait for international action.

So they're going it alone: Ships + pumps = gushers. Gushers + clouds = cover. Cover = cooling.

Hey, great idea - it will also lower the rising sea levels at the same time.

This idea uses the same liberal theory as money - it can be created/disposed of in thin air...:^)

That craft looks like something out of Dr Seuss.

There is actually a little science at work here, not mentioned in the article. The idea is not to vaporize vast amounts of water that will turn into clouds, directly.

Instead, there is a thin layer, just a few millimeters thick, of warm water that covers the surface of ocean water. Oddly enough, it strongly inhibits evaporation from the ocean. But by spraying a thin mist of water over it, this layer is broken up, and evaporation really jumps. And *this* is what puts a lot more water into the air.

The idea was first conceived as a way to get more moisture into the air off the coasts of harsh deserts, such as in Chile, where there is the phenomenon of the ocean, right next to a desert where it almost never rains, and is one of the driest places on Earth.

The biggest problem is that for ships of this sort to uptake that much water, they have to contend with “biologicals”, from microscopic to large animals, that clog the uptakes.

However, out in the oceans, the whole scheme may be thwarted by yet another oddity, and one that doesn’t seem to make much sense.

Evaporation, alone, does not make clouds.

Everyone had long assumed that when there was more evaporation, that clouds would form, but this is not necessarily the case. As part of the Man Made Global Warming theory, researchers went to the mid-latitude tropics to study evaporation and cloud cover, and discovered that the two seem to operate independently of each other, to a great extent.

There were times where the rate of evaporation off the oceans was enormous, but the skies were crystal clear, and remained so. At other times, with minimal evaporation, the sky was soon filled with clouds.

Why doesn't someone take pity on stupid old Bill and send him incognito to college where he might be able to learn some actual science and forsake his True Believer Status in this abject nonsense?

It's quite frightening that this uneducated weirdo has enough billions & billions to waste it like this.... perhaps he's exhibiting early onset dementia?

How many fish and other small creatures is this going to kill? Can you just see all the plankton and krill dying off and the whales starving? Bill are you actually thinking here?

Wow, people never cease to amaze me at how stupid we can be just because we can propose to do something with ‘technology’. Sucker born every minute.

Park a few off Washington state to see if you can give them cloud cover 365 days a year. Make it a really cheery place.

so Gates is throwing money at a project to do what environmentalists complain lakes like Lake Powell do naturally.... evaporation....... and they use that as an excuse to get rid of the lake...

I'm re-thinking this...

Let's all sign on, say it's a wonderful idea, and will solve everything in the Climate Change arena, and we need to do nothing more.

$7 billion is chump change compared with every other tax/fee proposal that is floating around.

I say — “Evaporate, Bill, Evaporate”.

It will be cheaper for all of us...:^)

For a mere billion dollars from the honorable Mr. Gates, I will study with great diligence and duty, the global warming problem if it takes the rest of my life.

I shall start my study in Vegas, in the solitude of Ceasars Palace. :-)
