Have to disagree that lack of the wheel was the "obvious" reason a few hundred Spanish soldiers were able to to "make mincemeat of the Aztec Empire in very short order". Neither was it firearms, horses, nor steel arms and armor. These things all helped, but the main factor was psychological.

The Aztecs, like the previous civilization groups before them, the Olmecs, Toltecs, et al, had a certain psychological mindset concerning warfare. The goal in their wars was to achieve their political goals, while simultaneously gaining large numbers of live, intact captives for human sacrifice. Thus the actual conduct of warfare was a large, elaborate game, with few of the combatants dying, or even being seriously wounded (scarred or maimed captives could not be sacrificed.) The Spaniards, on the other hand, were the last generation of veteran warriors of a struggle of almost a millenia in duration. They fought to win, and weren't shy about killing any number of the opposition whatsoever. They were consummate professionals, as their brethren were proving on a dozen blood-soaked fields of combat in Europe, as mercenaries, in those same years.

In such a "contest", and I use the term very loosely here, there could have been only one outcome, and that is the historcal outcome.

Professional warriors, well equipped and led, will almost always prevail, even at very disparate numbers, against what really amounts to dilletante gamers...
