Fellow FReepers, I have just been told that my Grandpa is breathing his last breaths on this Earth. Everyone must pass, but what makes this one tough is that he was my own personal WWII hero. His name is John and on his first bomber mission over Germany in WWII, he was shot down and was a POW in Stalag 17B for the rest of the war. He had one of his hands smashed by a German rifle butt, he had some teeth kicked out by German Army boots, and he suffered severe frost bite on his lower legs. He was an easy target because he was 6'3". His job was being a gunner on a B-17. He lived a good Catholic life with no complaints.
Heroes are not always famous 999.
God bless your Grandfather.
Hold strong. He did. :)
Standing in the anteroom of heaven is a privilege few are honored to experience. May you and your family be strengthened by God’s presence as you gather round your loved one. God’s mercy and grace to all.
Prayers for your Grandpa. God bless him.
Condolences and I salute your grandpa and thank him. His sacrifices in the name of a free people will live on in the stories that his offspring tell of him.
Lord, please hold this wonderful American hero in the palm of your hand. Keep him free of pain and allow him to feel Your incredible love every step of his journey. May perpetual light shine upon him and may all his loved ones meet him as he enters Heaven. Allow his family to feel comfort and peace every day until they are all united with you in Heaven. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen
Prayers sent. On a personal note, my father was also a POW in Stalag 5A near Moosburg in Germany.
He refused to talk about it his whole life. Only recently has he opened up a bit about it. He was a forward observer/cannoneer in the 132nd field artillery. Though he was a New York son of Italian immigrants, he served with the 36th Texas Division, 5th and 7th Army.
How blessed we are to know real heroes!
Prayers, prayers.
Prayers are up.
Prayers for your grandfather and your family. Our country was so blessed to have your grandfather’s service. What a hero.
Update:
Grandpa John passed at 9:10PM MTN time. He no doubt died while FReepers were praying for him. Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers. I hope he is in a better place.
