Jeremy Wade is full of fish stories, only hes not exaggerating when he describes his latest catch.
Wade is a big-game angler, constantly in search of freshwater monsters that make sharks seem as docile as dolphins.
The host of Animal Planets River Monsters, Wade plies his skill with heavy fishing equipment and a passion, he admits, that borders on obsession.
You start off interested in variety, and then its always about bigger fish, bigger fish, and I became fairly obsessive I think in my late teens and early 20s, he says.
The British-born Wade began fishing for carp.
There was a lot of mystique surrounding them. They were supposed to be hard to catch. But while this was happening, fishing was becoming much more popular generally, and because it was a small country, generally, and more people interested, it became less of an escape.
He stopped fishing for a time.
Then I just by chance came across an article about somebody who went to India fishing for a fish called a mahseer, he said. And a couple years after that I found myself in India with not much money in my pocket and not much of an idea of what I was going to do.
What he was going to do was stalk that mahseer as though it were Moby Dick.

If I ever end up in the amazon basin, I’m no longer going to worry about piranhas. Various species of catfish of all sizes appear to be the real killers.
I wouldn’t bring that thing aboard unless I had first introduced it to my .45
The picture at the link is worse, wow!
It is always the same,,,,,, they are going to catch a BIG fish....... and then they are going to turn it loose.
I always tell him, I know how this one is going to end!
Not much of a fisherman/woman, are we?
BTW, I don't fish but find stories of huge fish fascinating. (There have long been stories of huge, huge catfish around the dams on the Tennessee River.)
I've bought the first DVD set of “River Monsters” and know that its something that I can and will watch time and time again.
I was a HUGE fisherwoman back in the day. We had boats (Little Sister 42 ft Hatteras) and fished off shore for bill fish. I have a been there done that kind of attitude now
There is something a little creepy about Jeremy Wade. His eyes, I think. That’s part of the fun, for me.
Tiffany! LOL! That looks terrible!
42 ft Hatteras is a SERIOUS fishin’ boat!
I saw the video of the guy on shore kicking the giant fish. It’s up their with Megalodon (or whatever it’s called, about the prehistoric giant sharks).
Holy Schlamoly! And I thought getting a gar on your line was bad!
