Of course itunes is free....Every podcast I have ever wanted to listen to can be downloaded without itunes. For a few I had to go through itunes so I didn’t do it. Every MP3 file is called a podcast these days

Well, if you keep saying that every quarter (like you've been doing), sometime between now and the next century... I think you'll finally "hit it" ... LOL ...

Used to use WinAMP on Windows but it got invasive.

Get old version. (v2.95 here) and its still light on its feet.

CDEx to rip, old school WinAMP to play. It's all good, and free. :-)

Ummm... since you were commenting on this thread about iTunes, saying that you're not going to pay Apple... I wasn't sure you knew it was free.... :-)

At least everyone else is quite aware that it's free and available at Apple's website...

Every podcast I have ever wanted to listen to can be downloaded without itunes. For a few I had to go through itunes so I didn’t do it. Every MP3 file is called a podcast these days

The nice thing about the free Podcasts at the Apple iTunes Store, accessed through your free iTunes program -- is that you can do comprehensive searches on names or topics or companies or products -- and come up with Podcasts that you didn't even know about. It's all in "one place" right there for you on iTunes.

The other nice thing about iTunes is that it "keeps you up to date" on these podcasts, in that you don't have to keep it in mind yourself, to go back to some website somewhere and actively seek it out to download it. The iTunes free program does that for you and keeps you up-to-date on the continuing free Podcasts that you've chosen, and so whenever you want to listen to them, they are already there for you in the iTunes programs -- just waiting for you to listen to them.

You don't have to have it downloaded for you and you can choose just certain ones yourself, or you can have it continuously download the current ones for you, as time goes on and when you get around to it, you can listen to the free Podcast, whenever.

If you're like many people (and me included) many times I will forget about a certain podcast and/or not "actively" go back to search out and download the podcasts that I was interested in -- and later I find out that I've missed it and it's "rolled off" and it's gone now [some keep long-term archives and others may only keep a few days rolling back at a time].

So, that's a convenience for me to come back and find them all waiting for me on iTunes, even though I haven't been paying attention to it for a while... :-)

The iTunes program is a very feature-packed and organized program.

AND ALSO..., you may not be aware of it, but they also give away for free, some movies, some TV shows, and some songs. If you keep paying attention, you'll find quite a few free TV shows, free movies and free songs. They come and go and sometimes they're a limited-time free give-away -- so you just have to pay attention. But..., it's all in "one place" -- right there on the iTunes Store, right there in the iTunes program.

Another thing, too ... is that they have a whole bunch of free educational videos from some pretty good and prestigious universities, on iTunes. They can be complete university courses, right there on iTunes (of course, you're not going to get credit or a degree, but they can be interesting).

In addition, you can get a few free books there. I haven't checked lately, so I don't know how that is right now, but I've done that in the past. It may have recently changed because of the book situation with iPad, so someone would have to check on that one, now...

ANYWAY, there's quite a benefit to have the free iTunes program ...

Maybe I’ll try itunes again and I’ll do a system restore to nuke it if I don’t like it

You were saying ...

It's going to install QuickTime with the iTunes program, because that's an essential ingredient for ripping of CDs and also for conversion of your music files that you currently have, over to iTunes (you don't have to do that, as it will ask you), and it's for viewing movies and listening to the AAC format (that's not "Apple's format" but an open format that many use for compression, as opposed to MP3 for example).

QuickTime is more or less a "container" program (if you want to put it that way) as it uses many different codecs and you have have several different kinds of codecs operational inside of QuickTime. It's a "package" more than anything else. You can actually add codecs which QuickTime will then use automatically in its operation. I've done that on the Macintosh platform, so it will handle a lot more codecs than QuickTime comes installed automatically by itself. And that's something useful for people to know, too.

And also, when you do an install, it will ask you what formats you want to be used with QuickTime and iTunes. You've got that choice for which ones will automatically go to QuickTime and/or iTunes, when you install.

Also, if I remember correctly, it will install a background program (or two) which checks for updates. Some people get rid of that and just do the updates by their own choice. There are sites that explain how one might take care of that... but they're only tiny background programs anyway, so I don't think they're any big deal as they don't actually take up CPU cycles continuously; they just "sit there" more or less.

Anyway, it's a pretty comprehensive program and some people who don't know exactly what all it does may not be aware of all these things, but it's made to be the media center of your computer (the QuickTime/iTunes combination).

I'm just letting you and others know about it, that's all... :-)

Or try it out on a VM. It's free and easy. Then you don't even need the system restore, just hit "Delete".

Installing potentially troublesome software on your real machines is a thing of the past.

No way would I install this. At 93mb this program is designed to insinuate itself into every audio/video crevice on your Windows computer hard drive. If you own a Mac then of course you want to be tethered to to JobsInc. and paying his tolls as if you were a Medieval serf crossing a bridge

Oh, what a giveaway! Did you hear that? Did you hear that, eh? That’s what I’m on about! Did you see him repressing me? You saw him, Didn’t you?

So, you'll be shorting Apple heavily then? Putting your money where your mouth is?

Lloyd Blankfein and me developed a special CDO that we filled with Apple debt, warrants and other Jobsian junks. GS is also extending me a 20 million dollar line of credit to short the shiite out of it. So, the answer is yes, I am shorting Apple and putting my money where my mouth is

Yep, I favor VMware also, and use it on Windows, MacOSX, Linux.

Note: The "Player" is free, but doesn't allow you to create a new VM from scratch. For that you want to get either a) one of the glitzy workstation products (Workstation for Windows or Linux, Fusion for Mac) which all cost something, -OR- b) get the free (yaaay) VMware Server product for Windows or Linux. I like the latter, though I've used them all very successfully and extensively at work and home since 2006.

Hey, Dennis! We get it, you don’t care for Macs. So why are you wasting our time on this thread????
