Police search house of Gizmodo blogger, take Mac, cell phone in iPhone leak investigation

FREMONT, Calif. (AP) -- A blogger who posted pictures and details of a lost iPhone prototype has given up his computer, digital camera and cell phone to law enforcement.

A special computer-crime task force made up of different law enforcement agencies searched Gizmodo blogger Jason Chen's house and car, according to a statement and search warrant documents provided by Gizmodo.

The warrant says the computer and other devices may have been used to commit a felony.

Apple did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

“Seething irrational rage”

Not really, just because i do not like the guy at all or their marketing practices or their cultish, mostly leftish followers does not mean i do not respect his accomplishments
.
As an American company i wish Apple great success.
They make quality products and play their customers like a fiddle.
Capitalism at it’s finest.
As another thread indicated, An Apple user would have been much better off spending their 3 thousand bucks on Apple stock rather than their ego soothing computer in 1988.
They would have over $120 grand in the bank right now.

“I’ve actually tried to get any Windows user to run their computer on the Internet, use it for web browsing and downloading and all their normal and everyday stuff that they do with the computer (basically for all the stuff that they do with a computer) — for a year — and run that Windows machine without any anti-virus program, direct on the Internet and not behind a firewall.”

.
More mindless babble?

Like hundreds here I have done that for close to 18 years. Presently I use three machines that are always on, and have virus scanners loaded, but disabled due to the drag on production, and haven’t found a virus since early 2003 when a client emailed one to me.

I run scans during the night about every two weeks for the safety of my clients systems, but never find anything more than adware from Amazon or click.

Virus problems are grossly over-rated these days.

"Why should he be nailed for anything."

"He FOUND it."

"There was no legal, perhaps an ethical, obligation to return it."

"What crime was committed?"

~~~~~~~~
Is total lack of reading comprehension a prerequisite condition for being an Apple basher, or does simple ignorance and immaturity suffice?
From the original FR article:
"Editors at Gizmodo.com, part of Gawker Media's blog network, said in an article posted Monday that they paid $5,000 for what they believed to be a prototype of an impending iPhone 4G. The story said the phone was accidentally left at a bar in Redwood City, Calif., last month by an Apple software engineer and found by someone who contacted Gizmodo, which had previously indicated it was willing to pay significant sums for unreleased Apple products."
It's not mindless babble for Macintosh users, because they don't have the over 100,000 viruses that exist for the Windows platform. I don't think one can come up with as many as the fingers on even one hand for any viruses that have infected and been spread on the Mac OS X platform.
It's well known that a large majority of Macintosh users don't use anti-virus software at all, don't run it, don't scan with it -- don't care and probably will never care -- at the rate it's been going for the last ten years on the Mac OS X platform.
It may be mindless babble for you, as a non-Macintosh user -- but for all those Macintosh users, it's a beautiful thing ... :-)
Yup.
There is not a bigger pain in the ass than an anti-virus program.
I have never used one.
I’d rather take my chances.
Once in a while i’ll do a free online scan with Housecall.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/index.html?WT.seg_2=2009HP_housecall7_1
The way i look at it is if i ever do get that crazy virus well it makes for a great excuse to finally reload my computer and lose all the useless crap that has built up on it.
Well, coming from someone who just got through foaming at the mouth, about Jobs/Macintosh and anything Apple -- I don't think I have to be too concerned... :-)
Would having a personal Mac book get banned from the Livermore national lab for infecting their system be one of those “wonderful things?”
I have received Windows viruses before and they could easily be passed on to other Windows users even though I was never bothered by them.
Many Macintosh users never use any kind of anti-virus software, but since I have been directly dealing with so many other Windows users who do get infected quite a bit (even though it never bothered me) -- I still run checks, myself, to see if some Windows virus would show up in anything that they gave me or sent to me or I downloaded from them. I've been doing it to "help them out" doncha know..., because those viruses never infect a Macintosh machine.
And I do find their Windows viruses all the time and have warned others about it. Many times they found it hard to believe that they had it and sometimes other users think it was a "Macintosh virus" or something ... LOL ...
But, I usually can convince them and they will take care of their machines.
So, I don't mind Macintosh users "being good computer citizens" and helping out those Windows users with their virus problems.
It's just that Macintosh users don't have those problems, themselves, even if they can (and some do) help out those Windows users with their problems. :-)
You must not be aware that Macintosh has the ability to run all the software out there, not just some of it — you know, like Windows, and the Mac and Linux (and throw UNIX in there, too... :-) ...).
I’m glad to be able to tell you that you can boot up in Windows if you want to (but I never want to... doncha know... LOL ...), and/or just run Windows inside Mac OS X (but again, I never want to, but for those who do, you can ...).
So, you get the best of all worlds, with Macintosh, doncha know... :-)
Ah, but the lab doesn’t use Windows, do they!
Nice childish dodge, but no substance.
A moron lost a phone in a bar. Someone found it and thought it might be worth something to a media outlet.
"Finders keepers" - except that CA law runs to the contrary. If you know who it probably belongs to, you're obligated to return it to its owner.
When the lawyers asked for it back, they got it back.
. . . not that the onus was legally on AAPL to ask for it back. The fact that "someone" thought it would be of value to a reporter is basically proof that he was pretty sure who owned it - and made profiting from possession of it into basically theft.
Of course that "someone" could claim, with some justice, that the law against "finders keepers" was inspired by Christianity - and claim, with less justice, that that fact made the law an establishment of religion . . .
Hmmm. I can see why the big electronics company would LIKE to sic the police on me, but I do not understand the law being broken. Remember that it was legitimately left behind in a public place. This is something that could result from such carelessness.
The problem wasn't with who left it behind... that's one thing, but that's not related to anything in the law.
The problem was with the law that was broken and therein lies the problem with the guy who had the warrant signed by a judge. Just follow the story through with all the details and you'll see what the problem is.
Check some of the law's wording and a little bit about it in an article in Post #57 ...
The original ‘finder’ attempted to return the thing to Apple but they poo-poo’d him. Then he sold it.
