Fascinating collection of rare historic photos of cats serving with sailors and Marines. Cats were not only popular ship mascots, they were often considered important members of the crew because they rid ships of rodents. Some were even issued their own bunks and uniforms.

One night while on Boat Crew Duty in Genoa, Italy we had a squadron officer try and bring a pig back to the ship. He was caught before he got on the boat with it. Another strange one seemed to always happen. Two days out to sea the sea gulls disappeared and that night we always had Chicken.

Even in the 90’s it was nice to have a few cats around in Korea. Korean Hemorrhagic Fever was making a comeback...and it’s spread primarily by inhalation of dust from dried rodent droppings.

My Marine father fought on Tawara, and feeding a kitty in distress is something he would definitely do.

He passed away a number of years ago, but I know he's still a US Marine. :-)
