Apple Sells 300,000 iPads on First Day
The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 5, 2010 | Kerry Grace Benn

Posted on 04/05/2010 6:44:39 AM PDT by myknowledge

Apple Inc. said Monday it sold more than 300,000 iPads in the U.S., including preorders, on the first day the device was available.

The company didn't give a precise figure, but the tally was below the estimates of some analysts.

Buyers flocked to stores starting Saturday after weeks of publicity about the tablet-style computer.

Apple hadn't offered iPad sales forecasts, but over the weekend, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster more than doubled his initial first-day sales estimate to between 600,000 and 700,000 units, including preorders, based on longer-than-expected lines at stores and high expectations for online preorders. He had also lifted his 2010 forecast to 5.5 million units from 2.8 million.

Apple Has Already Sold More iPads Than Palm Pres Sold Last Quarter

That's impressive how?
And Windows 7 sold more units 10 minutes after launch than ipad has sold up to date. Palm has been comatose for years. Beating Palm is like beating a dead man.

UAE iPad fans jump the queue

Tablet computer is bound for the UAE's grey market.

UAE iPad fans move grey market to jump the queue.

Apple's iPad touchscreen tablet computer, which launched over the weekend in the United States, is expected anytime in the UAE's grey market, or so dealers claim.

Emirates Business has learned that dealers such as Alshop, who claim to be the first to get the iPad here, have already received more than 40 orders from Dubai. Apple enthusiasts had placed orders 45 days earlier to receive the iPad before its launch here. Dubai Mobiles, another dealer, confirmed that it would receive their first batch of iPads next week. Alshop is offering users the Wi-Fi model at Dh2,779 (16GB), Dh3,269 (32GB) and Dh3,759 (64GB). The model with both Wi-Fi and 3G facilities will only be available after the global launch, said dealers. The US firm Apple has priced its models from $500 (Dh1,836) to $830, globally.

And Windows 7 is is still abeating and abeating and abeating every single Apple product on the market in unit sales. In the December quarter, Win 7 alone sold more units than the iphone, ipod, and Apple macs sales COMBINED together.

It's getting so impressive that the Kindle Nation Daily is heaping praise on the iPad ... hoo-boy!

Kindle advocate praises iPad

Mark LaPedus
(04/06/2010 11:54 AM EDT)

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The Kindle Nation Daily, an independent blog site and advocate for Amazon.com's e-book reader, posted a shocking item: The site praised Apple Inc.'s iPad and said the device would ''kill'' the netbook.

But will the iPad be a ''Kindle killer''? ''Well, yes and no,'' according to the site. The Kindle Nation Daily is published independently by Stephen Windwalker and is not endorsed by Amazon.com Inc. It is a news source for Amazon.com's Kindle.

''We'll see how this shakes out, but from where I sat on baseball's Opening Day yesterday and the iPad's opening weekend, it appeared that Apple had hit a grand slam home run,'' according to the blog.

''There will be millions of people who buy iPads in the next few years who will never buy Kindles (or Nooks or Sony Readers or any other dedicated ebook readers, for that matter),'' according to the blog.

''The Kindle device itself will continue to chug along in its current and future models, building upon and doubling (this year) its current installed base of about 3 million units, but the iPad's installed base will probably catch up with the Kindle's hardware base within a year and keep right on going,'' according to the blog.

What will be the impact of the iPad? Here's what the blog says about the iPad: 1) The iPad will kill the netbook; 2) The iPad will not kill the laptop dead, but it will seriously wound its mass appeal; 3) The iPad will also kill or seriously cannibalize sales of the iPod Touch; and 4) The iPad could even cut into iPhone, BlackBerry, and Droid sales.

According to market watcher iSuppli Corp., Apple could sell as many as 7.1 million iPads this year, though International Data Corp. estimated 2010 tablet sales at 6 million for the entire industry.

The Apple iPad sports an unusually high processor-to-memory channel, an abundance of touch-screen silicon and a novel case design, according to a teardown report from UBM TechInsights, a sister division of EE Times. The report shows Samsung and Broadcom are among the major silicon suppliers in the system released to much fanfare Saturday (April 3).

There is a plethora of reviews for iPad, which are all over the map and mixed.

Windows 7 = 90 million sold. (Impressive)
ipad = 300,000 sold (JOKE)

Windows 7 = 1 million apps
ipad = 3,000 apps (HUH?)

Rmember, ipad is going directly against Windows 7 and all them laptops and netbooks that cost just $300, and can do a heck of a lot more than the ipad. It's no contest.

Apple iPad sells for $5,500 on eBay to Brit

THE NEWS TRIBUNE
Published: 04/06/1012:05 am

Apple Inc. iPad listings on eBay Inc.’s Web site surged fivefold over the past week as early purchasers targeted foreign consumers who can’t yet get the tablet-style computer at home.

The number of iPads on the site rose to 2,600 in the week ended Saturday, the day the product reached U.S. stores, San Jose, Calif.-based eBay said Monday in an e-mail. Resellers who had pre-ordered the device from Apple began listing the iPad before it went on sale.

One purchaser from the U.K. paid $5,500, more than 10 times the $499 asking price for the least-expensive iPad, eBay said.

Well, with Windows crapware going with the hardware that breaks down so quickly (as I was saying with my relatives and their poor experiences)... you add up the fact that you have to buy it three times over again, compared to once with Apple products, and you can save a fortune by buying Apple. ... hoo-boy! But, the iPad is being hailed as a success, by all that see it... what a deal! :-)

Apple's iPad is a winner

By Edward C. Baig
Updated: 04/06/2010 10:20:29 AM MDT

Months of speculation, feverish lust, an uberhyped prize that could disrupt the status quo of computing. You wouldn't be the first person to compare the run-up to Saturday's arrival of the iPad to the prelaunch mania that surrounded the iPhone. Apple's freshly conceived slate-style computer promises to influence the media, mobile entertainment and publishing industries the way its close cousin the iPhone has affected wireless.

The first iPad is a winner. It stacks up as a formidable electronic-reader rival for Amazon's Kindle. It gives portable game machines from Nintendo and Sony a run for their money. At the very least, the iPad will likely drum up mass-market interest in tablet computing.

For more than a decade, nobody has successfully cracked the tablet market. Apple, based on my tests over several days, is likely to be the first.

Apple has pretty much nailed it with this first iPad, though there's certainly room for improvement.

Video: iPad Installed in Car Dashboard (We Want One!)

Posted 04/06/2010 at 9:33:58am
by J.R. Bookwalter

If you could, would you install an iPad into your car’s dashboard? Some folks in California did it, and frankly we’d give up a big chunk of dashboard real estate to have one, too.

Engadget is reporting on the world’s first iPad automobile retrofit, which was installed in a Toyota Tacoma (of all things). The mod comes courtesy of SoundMan Car Audio in California, who took the time to document the process on YouTube, which you can see for yourself embedded below.

While the iPad is looking pretty sweet in the dash of that Toyota Tacoma, the SoundMan gang isn’t quite done yet -- they still have to wire it up to the Audison Bit One sound processor with McIntosh MMC406M six-channel amp so they can enjoy the iPad’s audible goodness as well as its visual charm.

Anyone else ready to rip out their car’s lousy dashboard and kick it iPad style?

Windows 7 is not only a better OS than Snow Leopard, it has been proven to be more secure to boot.
OSX has more security holes than a sieve.
That is why Windows 7 has sold more units in just 2 months, than all the Apple macs Apple has sold in in the last 8 years.
Go figure.

If your “relatives” are as retarded as you are, its a sin to hand any computer to them anyway. They might just put a hammer to it, and just bludgeon the computer into pieces.

You add up the fact that you pay on average 3 to 4 times as much for a mac, as you pay for an equally configured Windows PC, then have to deal with a badly designed OSX with big security holes, plus an Apple mac that the cheap Apple makes from the cheapest components they can get(they know Apple fanatics will buy any junk they give them), then you begin to understand the saying “a fool and his money are soon enough parted from each other”.

I'm still trying to get anyone that uses Windows to not use any Anti-virus program to see how long it takes before the whole thing is hosed... doncha know ... LOL ... I just can't find anyone... :-)

The Macintosh users ... well... you just can't even get them to use an antivirus program... it doesn't do any good... they just don't need one...

If your “relatives” are as retarded as you are, its a sin to hand any computer to them anyway. They might just put a hammer to it, and just bludgeon the computer into pieces.

Heck there are poor ole Windows users that have to trash their computers with Windows on it, because they can't run their machines any more after a year... LOL ...

They figure it's easier to get rid of it and just buy a new piece of crapware and run it for another year, doncha know ... :-)

But, hey, they've already posted here on Free Republic a comparison and the Macs and the other machines compared with features match up... just ask Swordmaker for that one... he's got the data and he's posted it several times... so there's no problem there.

But, it's typical of the crapware that Windows users have to defend all the time... they just can't get their facts straight... nothing new there... LOL ...

I'm not the one who refuses to stop using my anti-virus program. But, hey, I can understand why that would scare you half-to-death on a Windows machine -- you would never survive the experience.

The Macintosh users just sail along, no anti-virus programs and no infections... and certainly no 100,000 viruses on the platform... you can't even find enough to use all the fingers on your hand... LOL ...

But, heck! Apple just keeps pumping out those products and people go wild and crazy and buy them up and away we go... :-)

I have had plenty of feature for feature and price for pice comparisonss between Windows 7 laptops and Snow Leopard laptops at plenty of web sites. It;’s not even close. The Apple laptops are vastly more expensive.
There is reason Window PC’s are selling up to TWENTY times as many units as Apple macs every quarter. Windows PC's are a far better deal. Consumers are not stupid enough to buy overpriced Apple junk. The best judge of any product is the consumer.

By then, Windows 7 would have already hit at least 400 million and still going strong.
Every single day, the gap between ipad and Windows 7 will just continue to increase by leaps and bounds. Since the ipad was launched, Windows 7 has probably sold another 6 million already.

iPad sales to triple by 2012

Tuesday 06 April 2010 09:54

With Apple's iPad hitting stores on Saturday, market researchers at iSuppli believe the long-awaited tablet device has the potential for impressive demand, now and in the future, according to the company's preliminary forecast.

iSuppli said the tablet's attractive design, compelling applications and multi-touch capability will help to offset the initial omission of Adobe Flash from the device, and expects worldwide iPad sales to reach 7.1 million units this year, doubling to 14.4 million next year, and nearly tripling to 20.1 million in 2012.

The company noted that it believes this forecast is conservative and that feature enhancements along with Flash support could boost sales beyond its preliminary expectations.

Sales this year are likely to be driven by early adopters and others attracted to the iPad's unique touch-screen-based user interface, while sales next year and in 2012 will be driven up by a range of factors such as new applications, improved functionality and declining prices, the company believes.

"Touch is the new standard for user interfaces, providing a naturally intuitive way of operating an electronic device, whether you are two or 92," remarked Rhoda Alexander, director of monitor research for iSuppli, in a statement.

"The tablet form factor is ideally suited to touch. The iPad represents an intriguing mix of two devices that have struggled to gain traction for years: Internet appliances and tablet PCs. In a sharp departure from past tablet implementations, it appears that Apple has both minimized and maximized the capabilities of the devices, limiting it as a creation device but compensating for this shortcoming by offering a wealth of easily consumable applications. The device's initial limitations are likely to be overlooked if Apple provides enough content to keep users engaged within the product limitations," she said.

Also, Apple should expect competition in this field as rivals worldwide are poised to launch their own tablet PCs, many of which will have more robust capability than the early iPads, iSuppli said.

Still, Alexander believes being first out of the gate with a low-cost tablet alternative gives Apple a distinct advantage. "2010 sales could potentially climb much higher than the 7 million figure, and that first year success - combined with expected ongoing innovation - will help to keep Apple at the forefront of the tablet market for several years. Key to continuing success will be how quickly Apple responds to issues as they arise and whether the company can align suppliers to meet demand needs."

Apple needs to quickly address the lack of Flash support in the iPad to realize the upside potential, leading some to question the long-term viability of the iPad, she asserted.

"Until Apple addresses this issue one way or another, its decision not to support Flash - communicated earlier on by Apple CEO Steve Jobs - will have a limiting effect on the iPad's sales potential. This is because one of the key use cases of the device, as marketed by Apple, relates to web browsing or consumption of online content. Absent Flash, iPad users will not be able to enjoy Flash-driven content, which is used in a considerable amount of websites as well as web-based games and videos," said Francis Sideco, principal analyst, wireless communications at iSuppli.

This Flash issue has divided Apple fans and unbelievers into mutually opposing camps - a battleground between those who believe Apple can do no wrong and those that opine the Cupertino, Calif.-based behemoth has finally overplayed its hand, iSuppli pointed out.

There is the potential for consumers to end up disappointed if what they expect to be a great browsing experience from "a magical and revolutionary product" - which is how Apple describes the iPad on its website - turns out to be less than extraordinary, given the lack of Flash support.

To be sure, Apple's strategy with the iPad is largely centred on paid content, and has partnered with major providers that will sell their content on Apple's App Store for a fee.

However, with so much Flash content available for free, Apple may be excluding support for the software in order to encourage users to pay for any content they use on the platform, iSuppli noted.

The company reminded that Apple's App Store, which hosts tens of thousands of applications - with a current average price of $3.13 per application - and boasts more than 1 billion downloads since its launch in 2008, is a phenomenal cash cow for Apple.

And, despite grim predictions from some critics about the iPad eventually failing because Flash is missing, iSuppli reminded that Apple has a track record of defying great odds and successfully navigating previously uncharted waters, such as it did with the iPhone.

With initial orders falling in line with expectations, Apple is likely to stick with its strategy of not using Flash unless there is a notable impact on sales, iSuppli concluded.

iSuppli recently did a virtual teardown of the iPad, and said it will soon release a physical teardown as well.
