MS sees Windows 7 leap, but XP workhorse refuses to die

Most Windows 7 customers are satisfied with the new operating system, according to tech analyst house Forrester Research, but many stick-in-the-mud types still see no reason to upgrade from the OS that refuses to die - Windows XP.

Forrester published the results of its study (subscription required) about take-up of Microsoft’s old and new operating systems this week. It found that 86 per cent of 4,559 US punters who took part in the survey were happy with Windows 7.

However, the same research also reaffirmed that there’s still plenty of love out there for Microsoft’s aged Windows XP, with 43 per cent of respondents saying they could see no reason to upgrade to Windows 7.

Win 2.0 to Win3.11 was a big jump. Win 3.11 to Win95 rocked.

I still remember refusing to transition off of Win98 until after SP2 came out for XP. Before that, it was a PoS.

Win7 was surprisingly good right out of the box. I'm hard to impress, but Win7 seemed to fix everything I hated about Vista.

Windows XP is a great operating system. I don’t know why Microsoft even considered Vista.

Microsoft’s goal has always been to make money, not providing a pleasurable computing experience.

It was, I think, a half-arsed attempt to keep up with the promises they made much, much too early on in the development cycle. They should have fessed up and taken their lumps for breaking that promise rather than releasing Vista which, inasmuch as it is an improvement over XP in certain ways, is not the be-all/end-all improvement over XP that it should have been - it really should have been released as XP service pack 3.

Windows XP is pretty good but will be my last MS OS-—after it becomes hopelessly obsolete a few years down the road, I’m going to Linux.

I’ve had XP Pro on my XPS for 2-3 years and it has been solid as a rock, until the Firefox upgrade last week kept freezing it...just got the patch a couple days ago and we’re good again...never a day downtime...knock on silicone...I won’t upgrade until I have to...

Put me down for keeping XP for awhile. I see no reason to go out and spend the money for Windows 7. I will just wait until my next new computer purchase.

You mean, silicon.

Silicone is what fake knocks are made of.

I’ll never upgrade unless/until they finally quit fixing the bugs and holes in XP to force me to. And I’d go Linux in a heartbeat if it weren’t for all the neat stuff, mostly freeware, but also some very useful commercial software that I’ve bought that I don’t want to live without that is only available for Windows.

Fix that and we won’t have to wait for Google to finish Microsoft off.

What is this iPad thingy?

Do you have to download an app calculator to add 2+2?

XP workhorse refuses to die

That's OK; Microsoft has an app for that. Autoupdate will eventually kill your XP.

I've upgraded all my XP systems to Win7 with essentially ZERO problems. It's a fine OS.

I notice that your pic of Win7 "latest generation" is Build 7000, and is dated 12/2008. That's ANCIENT! Get with it -- get the RTM, baby! :)

“I’ll never upgrade unless/until they finally quit fixing the bugs and holes in XP to force me to.”

Feel the same way; reverse is true for me, too...I have legacy software that might or might not work with a new upgrade and don’t want to start all over for a while yet...I will when I have to.
