Goldfish survives 7 hours out of water

A British woman said her 13-year-old goldfish survived for seven hours out of water after she removed him from his tank because she thought he was dead.

Carol Norris, 44, of Cambridge, England, said the goldfish, Mr. Fish, was floating at the top of his tank at his 7 a.m. feeding time so she wrapped him in tissue paper and placed him in the empty bathtub to protect the fish's remains from falling prey to the family cats, The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.

Norris said she returned from shopping with her partner, Darren Bradnick, 40, at about 2 p.m. and the fish started flopping around as she prepared to bury him in the garden.

"I had wrapped him up like a mummy and when I picked him up the tissue was all stuck to him and then he suddenly started moving," Norris said. "I screamed when he flipped in my hand. I was amazed but it was quite spooky -- I don't know if they go into a coma."

Norris said she quickly placed the fish back in water and he now appears to be in perfect health.

"Apparently they can live up to 50 so he could be around for a while yet," she said.

Sherridan Moores, chairman of the Northern Goldfish and Pondkeepers Society, offered some ideas on how the fish survived for so long without water.

"It is possible the tissue paper could have kept the fish wet so it could still absorb oxygen in the air, helping it survive out of the tank," Moores said. "But to come back to life like this after so long sounds remarkable."

My college roomie and I kept a lobster alive in our fridge for a few days wrapped in a wet towel. He was a big hit with the ladies, until they found out we ate him.

A 13 year old goldfish can survive without water longer than far too many 13 year old kids can without TV, vidoe games, facebook, bad music or any form of electronic amusement.

Maybe I'm easily impressed, but coming back to life after any amount of time sounds remarkable to me.

Goldfish are nothing but carp with pituitary problems. Filthy little buggers, too - they can foul the best tank filter money can buy in a couple of days. I had one of those in one of my tanks, once. It pissed off my dragonfish in the middle of the night one time too many, and there was nothing left the next morning but a head and tail connected by a backbone. Gruesome, but fascinating.

I think Mr. Fish survived because he's planning revenge on Carol Norris for naming him Mr. Fish.

My daughter's gold fish (Herbie I think his name was) commited suicide by jumping out of his fish bowl back when she was a kid.

I found him on the floor, cold, stiff, and very dry. We had a formal burial in the back yard. ;~))

Thank the Lord for Global Moderation(tm).

Were it not for Global Moderation(tm), the paper would have either dried out due to Global Warming, killing the fishy. Or, if Global Cooling were in effect, the fishy would have been frozen to the point of frosting over, killing him.

But Global Moderation(tm) prevented the evaporation of necessary moisture, yet cool enough to slow down the metabolism... thus helping keep Fishy fish from smelling like Dead Fish.

LOL!

Franny & Zooey - pic#1 above - were a couple of Wal-Mart “junk” fish that thrived and survived for years in a small tank ( including a 4 day power outage in the middle of winter) but finally succumed to a bad case of ick.

Then you are overfeeding them and or you've never allowed the biological filter to become established. I have 50, yes 50 in a 25 gallon tank / coffee table and I have no problems at all. Just regular 25% monthly water changes.

Oh, goldfish can survive in a septic tank if need be. (Think, 'garbage in, garbage out'. LOL) But ick is their Public Enemy #1 because of it. And when they croak, they start to decompose and will cloud up the water in a matter of a couple of hours. The damn things can't even die neatly. Like I said, nasty little buggers.

Pal, if you have to worry about priming a bio-filter to keep those incontinent little scavengers from turning the water into a baby diaper, you need to find a different fish. LOL I like my gouramis, thank you very much. My under-gravel plate and the associated bacteria bed beneath work quite well together to help the main filter keep the water clear.
