Goldfish are nothing but carp with pituitary problems. Filthy little buggers, too - they can foul the best tank filter money can buy in a couple of days. I had one of those in one of my tanks, once. It pissed off my dragonfish in the middle of the night one time too many, and there was nothing left the next morning but a head and tail connected by a backbone. Gruesome, but fascinating.

LOL!
Franny & Zooey - pic#1 above - were a couple of Wal-Mart “junk” fish that thrived and survived for years in a small tank ( including a 4 day power outage in the middle of winter) but finally succumed to a bad case of ick.

Then you are overfeeding them and or you've never allowed the biological filter to become established. I have 50, yes 50 in a 25 gallon tank / coffee table and I have no problems at all. Just regular 25% monthly water changes.
