PEWAUKEE, Wis., March 17 (UPI) -- Officials in a Wisconsin city that disbanded its police department late last year said officers left behind 58,000 rounds of ammunition.
Pewaukee officials said the Police Department left behind 58,000 rounds of handgun, rifle and shotgun ammunition when it disbanded at the end of 2009, and administrators said they are looking into why so much ammunition was required for a 25-officer force, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday.
"It seems like it is way in excess of what you would need," Mayor Scott Klein said. "It begs the question of why it got up to so much and why would you continue to purchase it."
A Waukesha County sheriff's lieutenant said a department of the city's size would require less than 11,000 rounds of ammunition a year.
However, former police officer Robert Kraemer said the department regularly used about 30,000 rounds per year on four training shoots and much of the leftover ammo was likely from two shoots that were canceled because of budget shortfalls.
City Administrator Tammy LaBorde said officials are working to identify all of the ammunition to get an accurate estimate of value for selling the leftovers. Officials estimated the sale could bring the city up to $14,000.
It's a start.
Sounds like that ammo got pwned!
Zombies.
Pewaukee? PEWAUKEE? You gotta be kidding me! WTF is there to do in Pewaukee that would require that kind of firepower?
Good Lord! Just DONATE it all to the Milwaukee cops, LOL!
were talking 223 ???
by an order of magnitude
Had to change my tag line. Keep the record straight.
Near as I could tell, the main function of the Pewaukee police force was to enhance revenue by handing out traffic tickets.
well I wasn’t countin rimfire .......:o)
Stay safe !
Population 10,000 with 25 Officers?
I was thinking the same thing and that there's probably still room to pack some more in... In all seriousness, I have friends who have been buying ammo by the pallet load. which in terms of 5.56mm works out to about a quarter of a MILLION rounds, IIRC, a pop.
How do I get me some?
This was probably a result of the Homeland Security money that flooded every nook and crannie of the police Nation after 911. Gotta spend that money or lose it, you know.
