Breaking Into Comics The Marvel Way #1 ...is marked T+, which according to Marvel’s guidelines means that it is "Appropriate for most readers 13 and up, parents are advised that they might want to read before or with younger children."

So you won’t expect too much bad language, nudity of sexual content [but] in one story...

Comic books are vile today. They preach liberal debauchery to kids. If I had children I wouldn’t let them anywhere near them.

I’ve always maintained that be it movies, books, comics, television, music...if you’re using swearing, nudity and tons of gore, 99% of the time it is not because the “art” requires it, it is because the creators ain’t all that creative.

I left most new comics not long after Joe Quesada arrived at Marvel. He managed to suck the fun and wonder out and replace it with perversion, depression and overt liberalism. Thankfully I’ve got tons of old stuff from the 60s, 70s & 80s where adult themes and concepts could be explored while simultaneously providing decent entertainment for youngsters. Talented people can pull that off. He’s not one of them.

Comic creator are simply exploring the bounds of the medium. Some of it is really good, a lot of it is crap. The primary problem with the comics business today is costs. The product is far too expensive nowadays, so they are going gritty to go after a demographic with more money...JFK

That really breaks my heart that comic books are resorting to profanity.

Comic books were a big part of my childhood back in the 50's...we didn't have video games, or very much television past Roy Rogers and Howdy Doody...so comic books were a fantasy world escape for us.

It was mostly "Superman", "Superboy", "Action Comics", and "Batman"...but they were only a dime and I would read them over and over until the covers fell off.

I credit my lifelong reading ability and interest in words to comics...I learned a lot of words from them, and when I saw a new word, I was interested enough to look it up in the dictionary.

In our neighborhood we had big "comic book swaps", everyone would bring a double armload of old comics and trade for ones they had not yet read. In some cases, you could trade a good one for something valuable...like a pocket knife.

I can understand that the comic book folks are probably struggling these days with internets, video games, and television to compete with, but, all things have their time to shine and time to leave. If you have to resort to writing dirty words on the blackboard to get attention, you weren't very interesting in the first place.

Not just comic books - it’s all cartoons in general. I remember growing up and enjoying Tex Avery cartoons.

Comics are just catching up to hip-hop and rap, which your kids are downloading as we type.

I disagree with that general statement. Marvel is an exception because they are a liberal publication under the Disney wing. DC Comics, I now follow because Marvel has gone extremely left, offering the same ole storylines a 5 year old can come up with easily.

DC Comics, on the other hand, offers Vertigo..which also includes the upcoming film: KICK ASS. More mature. the actual Kick Ass? Those kids say the F and SH word in almost every scene of the comic, I kid you not. Truly extreme adult fare.

DC’s line of Green lantern, Flash, Batman are more interesting. Hal Jordan is a former Air Force pilot and the other Gl Stewart is a former Marine. Have not read anything anti-American in green lantern. The FLASH has been revived and involves the Flash returning to be..back with his wife. I recommend DC on most cases.

Disney does not sponsor “gay Day”.

And Marvel already had their first openly gay hero come out years ago named “Northstar”.

I’ll have to disagree there. Comic books are often used to preach liberal messages these days which is reason enough to stay away. For example, look at the evolution over time of Superman’s religion. http://www.adherents.com/lit/comics/Superman.html

Also, the treatment of women as far as the art goes can sometimes border on soft porn.

Comic books were a big part of my childhood back in the 50s, too. And up to the mid 60s, also. Action Comics,The Lone Ranger,Cisco Kid, Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery, Our Army At War,etc. Being a kid was good fun, then, with decent enterntainment in comics, movies, and TV.

I disagree and dont see how the religious aspect of Superman has to do with me reading the comics. His relgion is Rao, not Mohammed nor Christianity. BTW, I’ve never bought a single Superman comics until his death by Doomsday (in mint condition it’s now worth more than 200) And regarding women in comics, they are supposed to look hot. Would you prefer someone to look like Hillary Clinton or Helen thomas saving you from a burning building?

I was an original Fantastic Four reader as a child (way back in the early sixties). Years went by, and when the first movie came out, I picked up a new FF comic book...I didn’t recognize anything at all. The innocence of what I had read as a child (about as bad as it got was “It’s CLOBBERIN’ time!”)had been replaced with metaphysical junk and liberalism. I was so sad to see what had become of the FF.
