LONDONDERRY – English teacher Melinda Dennehy has been charged with indecent exposure for allegedly e-mailing nude photographs of herself to a 15-year-old student at Londonderry High School.
Dennehy, 41, of Hampstead, turned herself in to Londonderry police this morning and was promptly arrested, Londonderry Police Chief William Hart said. Dennehy has since been released on $10,000 personal recognizance bond, but is not allowed near school grounds, Hart said.
Hart and Londonderry Superintendent Nate Greenberg held a press conference on the arrest at Londonderry Police Station this morning.
The charges stem from an investigation begun earlier this week into a series of photographs of Dennehy that had been sent to a student at the school, Hart said.
According to the arrest affidavit released this afternoon, police believe as many as four nude pictures were sent two months ago to the student, whom Hart identified as a male juvenile. The photos were forwarded and seen by at least two other juvenile students at the school, according to the affidavit.
Dennehy teaches sophomore level English classes at the school, and has been employed by the school district since 2007.
The digital photos came to the attention of Londonderry High School Assistant Principal Greg Warren on Wednesday morning and had been distributed "throughout the school," according to the affidavit.
The juvenile when questioned claimed he had kissed Dennehy, had exchanged numerous text messages of a sexual nature with her, and that Dennehy had offered to perform oral sex on him, according to the affidavit.
Indecent exposure is a Class B felony punishable with up to seven years in prison and a $4,000 fine, Hart said.
Hart said the investigation was ongoing, but that he did not believe there would be any additional charges forthcoming at this time. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Officer Adam Lane or Det. Kris Gore at 432-1118, Hart said.
Londonderry Superintendent Nate Greenberg said Dennehy was placed on paid administrative leave Wednesday and that the school's own investigation is ongoing.
"Needless to say, we will continue to conduct our own investigation and will take any action deemed warranted by our findings," Greenberg said. "As always, the safety and wellbeing of the children of our community will be given the highest priority."
Dennehy is scheduled to be arraigned at Derry District Court on Tuesday, March 23, at 8:30 a.m.

The whole "Reporter O'Meara filing from Londonderry about a teacher named Dennehy" thing mislead me a little.
I have information, based upon interviews with several male juvenile witneses that Melinda Dennehy an English teacher employed at the Londonderry High School, in Londonderry, New Hampshire, sent at least (1)one picture of herself with her genitals exposed to A_____ R_____ whose date of birth is October 2, 1994. a copy of this picture is in the possession of the Londonderry Police Department. This picture has been identified by co-workers to be that of Melinda Dennehy.
On March 3, 2010 at approximately 11:39 a.m. it was reported to School Resource Officer Adam Lane by Assistant Principal Greg Warren at the Londonderry High School that inappropriate picture(s) of a female teacher were being distributed through out the high school by students. School Resource Officer Adam Lane then met with Assistant Principal Katie Sullivan and juvenile A_____ R_____. A_____ R_____ then disclosed that approximately two months ago, his teacher Melinda Dennehy had sent him (4)four nude pictures of herself to his hotmail email account. A_____ R_____ then emailed the pictures he received to two of his friends S_____ O_____ and J_____ K_____. A_____’s father R_____ A_____ provided an email that showed the nude picture of Melinda Dennehy being sent from jdenneh@aol.com to _______@hotmail.com.
Juvenile A_____ R_____ also disclosed that Melinda Dennehy had continuously sent him text messages. In some of those messages Dennehy told R_____ taht she wanted to give him a “bl0w job”.
A_____ R_____ reported that in the past two months time, Melinda Dennehy kissed him twice on two seperate[sic] occasions on the mouth in a classroom at the Londonderry High School.
Interview with A_____ R_____ revealed that upon receiving the pictures from Melinda Dennehy, he first viewed the pictures on a computer located at __________ Road in Londonderry, New Hampshire. This is the residence of S____ C____, a friend o A_____ R_____.
During the school’s investigation, student J_____ B_____ was interviewed by Assistant Principal Paul Dutton. During this interview J_____ B_____ pulled up Dennehy’s nude pictures through his AOL email account. The picture was forwarded to Nate Greenberg the Superintendent of Londonderry Schools who turned it over to the Londonderry Police Department.
Guilty of a misdemenor. Give her 2 years of probation.

As a teacher I am always surprised by these stories.
I know many, fortunately, that are too darn busy teaching, and living wonderful lives with their families, to even consider anything like this.
They have “naughty teachers” in Great Britain, too.
