Sailors complain of abuse from their commander, captain relieved of her command

WASHINGTON (Associated Press) -- A Navy captain was demoted because she berated and assaulted her crew, not because she led her guided missile cruiser on a drag-race with another U.S. warship in the Pacific, an investigation shows.

Capt. Holly Graf was relieved of her command of the cruiser USS Cowpens after an investigation substantiated crew allegations that she was abusive and used her position for personal gain, naval officials said Thursday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

“She lost her job as Captain of a ship. She was technically not demoted as she is still in the same grade she was in as the Captain of the Cowpens, and that my friend is my issue.”

Right that is your issue and what I responded to. You are talking about a rank reduction which didn’t happen.

Frankly, I don’t give a damn dear.

Yep. She’s now the CO of USS STEELCASE, part of PENTRON 1.

The ability to obliterate 2/3rds of the planet not enough?

The ability to establish air superiority over any airspace in the world not enough?

The One is working hard on changing that!

"My husband told me that women officers are the worst. They are prone to abuse of power and they use their position to play favorites with the guys they like."

During 10 years in the Army I worked with or for any number of female officers. For the most part they were professional, competent and inspiring. Like their male counterparts however, there were a subset who enjoyed their power and used their authority to, I suppose, overcome their feelings of personal inadequacy by diminishing their subordinates.

I spent 25.5 years in the USAF. I loved it, but discipline - outside of flying units - isn’t its forte.

The first thing they teach you in the USAF is to NOT OBEY orders if they contradict your mission.

They make you “dorm guard” and tell you that you can only let in your own flight members and your Drill Instructors on recognition and everyone else has to show their military I.D. card. Then they have some other DI come by and tell you that you had BETTER open that door, they ORDER you to open the door, they tell you that you are in a world of hurt if you don't open that $#%^&#*@ door! But you had better NOT open that door unless they show their military I.D. card.

The Air Force takes a different kind of discipline than the Marine Corps.

Is this a calculated leak to make the Navy a laughingstock? Everyone on board VOLUNTEERED to kill and die for their country, if necessary, and they’re upset that a wad of PAPER came their way? Where’s DADT when you need it?!

100% of 01’s get promoted to 02.

100% of 02’s get promoted to 03.

100% of 03’s who stay in get promoted to 04.

100% of 04’s who stay in get promoted to 05.

100% of 05’s who stay in get promoted to 06.

Do you see what the problem is here?

This happens in "Beetle Bailey" almost every day. Sarge is in trouble.

No because Sarge is a sergeant and beetle is a private. The captain of a US Navy Warship has a different set of rules. If someone from the ranks need a tune up you send a chief to do the job. If it is an officer then the XO gets the task. The captain can't do petty and vindictive.

As for this being different than the past please recall that George S. Patton almost lost his stars for slapping an enlisted soldier. Old rules. The DBFH failed to learn them so she lost her command.

O3 - fully qualified nearly 100%

O4 - best qualified 80%

O5 - best qualified 70%

O6 - best qualified 50%

Was that all branches or just Navy.

I know an 03 navy. Currently promotions are if you stay active duty you get promoted. 20% of 03’s get out leaving 80% for promotion etc. The break point is from 06 to 07. And yes there are a very few who meet the navy's IG who as a result are not promoted.

They're listed as DOD #'s so I'm assuming they're for all branches. I was an (Army) O3 on the promotion list for O4 when I resigned...I was one of "Clinton's quitting captains," a bunch of mid-careerists that just didn't want to deal with the culture of political correctness and micromanagement after the meals on wheels programs in Somalia and Bosnia. Certainly things have changed since my time, and your finger's closer to the pulse than mine, but I just had to run the numbers after your "100% post" :-)

Hang in there!

A real Captain doesn’t need to throw or push or what ever. And yes, I was a Naval Officer.

i get it... the topic was not leadership... someone said to the effect that wimpiness was caused by woman in the military... and that may be true, but the female captain herself didn't seem wimpy... that's what my comment was about...

Yeah, your statistics. Weeding out starts at the O-3 level. I'd say that fewer that one in four or one in five officers commissioned has a chance to make 0-6.
