Sailors complain of abuse from their commander, captain relieved of her command

WASHINGTON (Associated Press) -- A Navy captain was demoted because she berated and assaulted her crew, not because she led her guided missile cruiser on a drag-race with another U.S. warship in the Pacific, an investigation shows.

Capt. Holly Graf was relieved of her command of the cruiser USS Cowpens after an investigation substantiated crew allegations that she was abusive and used her position for personal gain, naval officials said Thursday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

As for her family being flown to port visits, I’m not even sure of the reason. There was no love loss between her parents and her. Or one of her other sisters and her. There were pass down instructions for the import OOD to never give her father honors. Screw that. In Gibraltar I certainly rendered honors for her father, a retired Navy Captain. He earned them, and I didn’t give a _hit what her pass down was. I was not going to stand watch and let him come aboard without rendering proper honors. She came screaming out of the hanger bay, asking “who in the _uck is standing OOD” and something about her pass down, blah, blah, blah. She saw me, stopped, sneered, said “oh, it’s you”, then went back in the hanger bay, her parents left standing wide eyed on the hanger deck. Crew not being allowed to email? How about the poor JO who’s wife had just had a baby, and she wouldn’t allow him to email her, or allow email to be transmitted to the ship? He ended up being kicked out of the wardroom for a period of time, because he went to her to ask if he could please at least send a quick one line email to his wife. Needless to say, all the officers followed him. All the officers were eating on the mess decks for while, and the enlisted loved it. Personally, I think the officers loved it too. They could finally relax, instead of listening to her screaming rages during a meal.

Well they did not do something stupid. This lady did something stupid on several occasions. Ya, the service has been taken over by MBA’s instead of warriors. But if you make a major screw up you are gone.

Now with these added incidents, I can agree that she deserved removal. The initial accusations mentioned above seemed trivial and whiny. If the woman had mental issues, it was about time they removed her.

That’s because in the USN we called them ‘sea daddies.’

Yep, and along with whatever she did or didn’t do, the bottom line is that she failed to inspire confidence in her ability to command, among those she commanded. Antics like are described here sound like symptoms of someone that is losing the respect and confidence of their subordinates... and knows it.

From the article you linked to: Even though Graf comes from a Navy family — her sister and brother-in-law are both admirals, and her father was a captain — there appears to have been no "godfather" shielding her and greasing the skids for her promotion, Navy officers say.

Now that's funny!

And at the same time, quite telling. That *NO* senior officer became "godfather", or "Rabbi" to this Captain indicates to me that higher command were well-aware of her problems, before things came to a head...

I’ve run across a few ships company Lieutenant JGs that showed this kind of imbecilic behavior, one in particular comes to mind that still haunts my dreams 25 years later, but never a Senior Officer. The department heads and Senior Officers were always personable people. In fact our Captain the famed, Rear Admiral James Flatley, we nicknamed Friendly Flatley.

Now some of the Navy pilots on the other hand were stretching the sanity envelope a bit, but they were generally good guys. They had to be, there lives depended on the squids working on their A/P

People who have never been in the Navy, can't really appreciate the towering responsibility that comes with being a captain of a ship at sea. You're right, the Navy - like any branch of service - is going to have its share of yahoo officers. But, those aren't likely to make it past their initial obligated service. And, some don't even make it that far.

But, for an officer holding the rank and billet of Captain, to have made it this far with these personality and command deficiencies, is disturbing. Some might disagree, but I would bet a dollar that had she been a man, her career would have been over years ago. Female officers - especially those who are surface-warfare qualified are protected, at least to some degree. There's no other way to put it. Sorry, if that's offensive to anyone.

perhaps these sailors are the type that just can’t stand women in the Navy.

Or perhaps she's just another dyke with a hatred toward all humanity. Typical of dykes.

You don’t have a clue how things work in the Navy.

I’ll try to ignore the immature response to what was not the issue to begin with.

I frankly don’t give a hoot whether you think her career is over. To anyone with military experience, that is pretty obvious. Demotion is what the article said and demotion is losing rank.

She lost her job as Captain of a ship. She was technically not demoted as she is still in the same grade she was in as the Captain of the Cowpens, and that my friend is my issue.

She really should be demoted. You think losing your job and retiring as an O-6 is any kind of punishment. You could do her more harm by sticking her in the eye with her retirement papers.

My husband told me that women officers are the worst. They are prone to abuse of power and they use their position to play favorites with the guys they like.

“Three ribbons and esws or the officers equivalent and she was a capt?”

— Those three “ribbons” are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
It is customary to wear only your top three when you have a large ribbon rack. I do.

Or maybe she just has a screw loose which has been suggested based on her actions . . . . I don’t make judgments as to someone’s personal life on the basis of looks. Just because some find her unattractive doesn’t make her a lesbian.
