Sad day for a clown: Tampa man jailed for wearing illegal mask

Charged with wearing a clown mask on a public road, an 18-year-old Tampa man was jailed Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies say Matthew David Lopez, of 7003 Ponderosa Drive, was seen with two other people walking south on N 58th Street, just north of E Fowler Avenue. What caught a deputy's attention was Lopez's masked face with a bright red-and-orange wig, according to an arrest affidavit.

The deputy followed the group in an unmarked car as the group walked west through a slightly wooded path behind several business offices.

A marked Temple Terrace Police cruiser showed up soon after, and the group ran away before deputies could question them.

They were found near N 58th Street and E 122nd Avenue.

Lopez was taken to the Hillsborough County Jail on charges of wearing a mask or hood on a public road after the age of 16 years old and resisting arrest without violence. (Click here to see his mugshot).

He was released on $750 bail.

Obviously there is more to this story than was written in this article—or at least I hope so. If I understand this correctly, any clown going to work or a party will be subject to arrest? What have I missed?

This big government nonsense is getting out of hand. If someone wants to walk down the street wearing a clown mask, that’s their Constitutional right to do so!

In most places disguising your identity is considered a minor offense. The fact that they ran upon seeing a cruiser is pretty solid indication they were up to something.

The law states not only masks...

charges of wearing a mask or hood on a public road after the age of 16 years old ...

But a Hood. You CAN wear a hood, apparently, if you’re younger than 16. After that, no hoods for you.

..and resisting arrest without violence...

Basically, this means the perp yelled out “Don’t TASE ME BRO!” (Don’t arrest me ! Stop !)

They tend to ignore it then. They tend to ignore it most times until the person does something suspicious like run away when they see a cop car.

There are more and more public cameras, and more and more people with their own cameras, taking pictures of people in public.

A mask is the only way to keep your identity from the feds. Otherwise they can easily track your whereabouts with facial recognition software.

So the question is, do people have a fundamental right to move from place to place without revealing their whereabouts. I think they do.

And I think that right could well trump the fact that allowing people to walk around with masks would make us less safe.

They should make clowns get concealed facial permits.

We always put up a "no masks allowed" sign on the store window for halloween but that's not the same as wearing a clown face in broad daylight, on a public street.

That is no different than Mitt Romney's hair!

Figures its Tampa. Ybor City in Tampa has facial recognition software attached to cameras aimed at citizens on the street.

I'm sure the law allows for reasonable exceptions.
