THE UNITED STATES ICE HOCKEY TEAM HAS DEFEATED CANADA 5-3!!
um...The 2002 Salt Lake City Gold Medal game was between who?
Actually, I think the US and Canada have played each other 6 times since Squaw Valley, I think. They certainly played in the gold medal game in Salt Lake City, where Canada won 5-2.
To quote Maurice Chevalier....ah yes I remember it well
I’m for ANYTHING that disturbs Costas. He became my enemy the night he tried to besmirch the Bambino’s reputation.
“So many of Canadas shots were so wide of the net.”
A shot, by definition, would score if there were no goalie there. So a shot wide won’t count in the stats, only the ones on target.
Quite happy to see Team Canada get whipped here. Glad Kesler scored! There’s nothing Canadian about this team coached by Babcock and picked by Yzerman. 0 Canucks played.
“Finland will become the #3 seed on the strength of the goal-differential tiebreaker.”
First tiebreaker is seed. Russia is the 1 seed out of their division, and are guaranteed number 3. Unless the Finns completely blow out Sweden, USA has clinched the 1 seed, and a bye through to the Quarterfinals.
And I got to see it for free!
To be honest, I wasn’t even thinking about the game one way or the other at the time. I’m at work, and when I have some down time, I generally check FR to see what’s going on, but with an eye towards political developments and so forth, so my guard was down.
It’s aboat time.
You’re right on Russia being guaranteed the #3 seed. The restatement of the rules I read omitted the fact that group standing comes before everything, even points.
I’ve read the official rules now, though, and I still think what I said about the effect of the Sweden-Finland game on USA’s seed is right. The winner will be 1st in their group, which is the same as the USA. If the game is decided in regulation time, then the winner will also have the same number of points (9) as the USA. If the game goes into overtime, then the winner will only have 8 points and the USA will have the #1 seed.
From here, Finland has already clinched the next tiebreaker, goal differential, against USA, so if they win in regulation (blowout or not), they’re #1 and USA is #2. Sweden, on the other hand, will have to win in regulation by 6 to take the #1 seed, or by 5 to go to the next tiebreaker, goals scored. If they win by 5, Sweden will have to have scored 9 goals in the game to take the #1 seed, or 8 to go to the next tiebreaker, IIHF rankings. I’m pretty sure Sweden has this last one over the USA, though I haven’t checked.
So the USA needs the game to go into overtime or for the Swedes to beat, but not blow out, the Finns, to keep the #1 seed.
I’ve been corrected. Russia is actually guaranteed the #3 seed, and they’ll play the winner of Canada-Germany. So you were right the first time - either Canada or Germany will be going home empty-handed.
As I meant to ping to you:
Ive been corrected. Russia is actually guaranteed the #3 seed, and theyll play the winner of Canada-Germany. So you were right the first time - either Canada or Russia will be going home empty-handed.
Nope, Russia is the 3rd seed no matter what. Finland goes to #4 if the lose or win in OT.
“Now thats why I love hockey! WOW!”
Yep - a great game and a great sport. My son plays lacrosse, and they have just introduced a pro team in the area. They have a GREAT comercial for it.
Goes something like this (and you can imagine the visuals):
“It’s like baseball, with more hits.”
“It’s like soccer, with more scoring.”
“It’s like hockey. With balls.”
Nice double play on words at the end! But hockey still has lacrosse beat (the speed mainly for me).
USA BABY!!!
Miller is the MAN!!! Frantic pace at the end.
Just as intense as the game before it. For once, the hype lived up to the game. Now if we could just get rid of the insufferable MSNBC commercials, and the 24-7 curling, it would be perfect.
Then you don't know many hockey fans.
I’ll go out on a limb and say Germany goes home empty-handed.
Sweden won 3-0, so now what?
