TAKOMA PARK, Md. (AP) -- As back-to-back snowstorms shuttered schools for the week across the mid-Atlantic states, parents fretted about lost learning time, administrators scheduled makeup days and teachers posted assignments online.
But Marla Caplon worried about a more fundamental problem: How would students eat? The two snowstorms that pummeled the region, leaving more than 3 feet of snow in some areas, deprived tens of thousands of children from Virginia to Pennsylvania of the free or reduced-price school lunch that may be their only nutritious meal of the day. The nonprofits that try to meet the need when school is not in session also closed their doors for much of the week, leaving many families looking at bare cupboards. And many parents working hourly jobs were unable to earn any money during the week, as the snow forced businesses to close.
Caplon is a food services supervisor for Montgomery County Public Schools, where about 43,000 children are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. Some also get breakfast, dinner and bags of staple foods to take home for the weekend. The snow days meant children would get none of that until Tuesday, because schools are closed Monday for Presidents Day.

Are you freaking kidding me? BAGS OF FOOD TO TAKE HOME???!!!
Mmm, now you made me hungry.
Hey kittykat, just my 2 cents. I grew up on welfare, single parent home, and my mom always had nutritious food at home to eat. It wasn’t fancy, but there was no excuse for being hungry. Fast forward to my kids, we were struggling, but my kids always had something to eat. Fried potatoes (with onions hot dogs and ketchup), spaghetti, rice, tacos, oatmeal for breakfast, but I always felt it was MY responsibility to feed my kids. Americans have no problem with helping people in dire straights. We have no patience with people to lazy to help themselves. It’s in the bible, if a man doesn’t work, he shall not eat. A man who won’t work to feed his children is not a man.
Holy Cheese, your 100% correct Battman!!
Wow. Are you gullible. You weren’t really born in ‘77, were you?
Nobody here has a problem with helping folks that need help. What a bunch of people here have a problem with is Liberals telling us that there are thousands of crumb crunchers that exist in a single county that are just one lead chip away from dying of starvation. So to combat that they get free, breakfast, lunch, dinner and sacks of food to take home. I only eat one meal a day!
Montgomery County Maryland is one of the richest counties in the US. If they have 40,000 kids on free meals they have a very low threshold and money to burn.
Go to a school lunch room, take pics of the emaciated kids you see in line and post them back here. Or just post your address and we’ll send them your way.
PB&J is illegal now.
Peanut allergies.
Bologna is on the skids with the nutrition crowd due to nitrates.
Michelle Obama has had “Little Debbie” detained..
The Gubmint knows what is best.
You seem to have a great disdain for Conservatives.
I can understand that since we are all cigar chomping fat cats /s
Not to worry. Obama has reduced all of America into Dickens’ Oliver Twist: “Please, Sir, May I Have Some More”!
First ladies highlight issues and as for charitable assistance. First whores make unconstitutional demands. FWOTUS?
Stay the hell away from my oatmeal pie Beeotch!
Nice sob story, but if they father was able to afford 4 kids he should also have been able to afford to pay life insurance.
As a person of faith- you are right on. It is not right nor Christ-like to paint with a wide brush people you have not ever met, are not going to ever meet, and know nothing about. You being the majority of the posters on this thread. Certainly there are plenty of moochers and druggies. But that is not automatic.
Why didn’t the dad have life insurance? It’s a serious question. My husband had life insurance lined up by the time our first child was three weeks old. We spend $40 a month on coverage for both of us. Once you have kids, it’s not optional.
No problem with helping others, on a personal or corporate level. It’s the government that has not business in the daddy government business.
I’m sick of this cr*p. Let them eat peanut butter. If their parents are soooooo dysfunctional they can’t feed their kids lunch for a few days their kids should just be taken away from them.
WE HAVE GOT TO MAKE THIS STUFF STOP!
Horrors! How ever do they survive every weekend, seasonal break and summer?
Although, I will say from personal experience, many students who are supposed to take medications for seizures very often don't get their meds over the weekend breaks. Parental irresponsibility run amok.
Some also get breakfast, dinner and bags of staple foods to take home for the weekend.
Ok, I still ask, what do they do for the frequent week-long breaks and for the summer?
