Army-Navy Game Called Liability – 4

As far as I can tell they are talking about this guy, Michigan Representative Paul W. Schafer.

You must be right.

"Charging that athletic rivalries between the Army and Navy led eventually to 'waste and duplication' in the nation's defense program, Representative Shafer, Michigan Republican, suggested today that the annual Army-Navy football game and all other sports contests between West Point and Annapolis be eliminated."

Maybe not the best idea he ever advanced during his time in Washington.

The more we go back, the more the future looms. Same movie, same plot, different actors

Sounds like he got his knickers in a bind because his airplane had to make a "hazardous landing" at an Army field rather than than a nearby Navy field. Maybe Army Navy parochialism was far worse before we entered WWII, but I have difficulty believing that they wouldn't be permitted to land at the Navy field if there was any actual danger.

I'd guess that the Navy field was busy, flying an Air Group out to a carrier, perhaps, and there was no real risk at the Army field. Any way, I can't figure out how the Army/Navy Game is involved.

He wouldn't know it at the time but in 1942 Navy midshipmen would cheer (under orders) for Army because the cadets couldn't make it to Annapolis for the game because of wartime travel restrictions.

>>The more we go back, the more the future looms. Same movie, same plot, different actors<<

It is scary. For a moment there I thought I was pinged to one of my “taxpayer revolt” threads.

Other than the Camel ad and the proper use of grammar, 2/3 of this could be out of today’s paper!

Brazilians protest RN action

Tuesday, February 13, 1940 www.onwar.com

In the South Atlantic... The British cruiser HMS Dorsetshire intercepts the German blockade runner Wakama which is scuttled near Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian government formally protests the British action.

From London... The British government imposes strict controls over the railway network but continues to allow private ownership and operation of the railways. A Labour Party proposal to nationalize all forms of inland and coastal transport is defeated in a House of Commons vote.

February 13th, 1940

UNITED KINGDOM:
The present owners of Britain’s railways will continue to run them during the war - but under strict government control. MPs were assured tonight that the private interests of the various companies which have been unprofitable in recent years will not be allowed to impede the war effort.
A proposal by the Labour Party for the nationalisation of all forms of inland and coastal transport was then defeated in a Commons vote. While controlling railway fares and charges, the government will now guarantee the companies against financial losses. Railway company shares have risen sharply in the past few weeks.

FINLAND: Finnish Foreign Minister Väinö Tanner is again at Stockholm. He is told by the Swedish Prime Minister Per Albin Hansson and Foreign Minister Christian Günther that Sweden would not send troops to help Finland. Also any British and French requests to allow their troops to cross Swedish territory on their way to Finland would be refused.
