Pinball Wizard? Seriously?
Posted on 02/07/2010 5:13:14 PM PST by Minn
I'm trying to understand what it says about the state of American music and culture that, in every Super Bowl half time show since the wardrobe malfunction, a song less than 30 years old hasn't been sung.
I have plenty of fond memories of the Stones, Bruce, and to a far lesser extent, the Who. But what will the NFL do when all these guys are dead?

I love and truly appreciate The WHO even though they were a little before my time. My kids love Townsend and Daltry, too. But to be completely honest, as a singer it hurt my voice to hear Daltry trying to hit some of those notes. I saw Plant & Page a few years ago (maybe 10 now) and they still put on one heck of a show, and were still full of plenty of energy, and Plant’s voice was great, too... I don’t think Daltry was ever taught how not to ruin his voice. It’s a real shame, IMHO.

I think Outkast would be pretty sweet for the halftime show. I’m not sure how many others would actually do it.
I think it is more likely that they would go the Lady Gaga route or something like that. Rap for the most part is too graphic for this kind of audience.

Who knew that the sight of Janet Jackson's nipple had the power to turn all future Super Bowl halftimes into nostalgia acts? The sight of Pete Townsend - bald, gray and mostly deaf - singing about his generation and "teenage wasteland" is just...sad.
Who do they have lined up for next year, Herman's Hermits?

AND it’s better than all the years we put up with “Up With People”!! Now that was CRAP!

I don’t know about the black nail polish or someone in their 20s, but now that Soundgarden is back together, I think they can rock ever bit as hard as anyone out there.

Au contraire - The Who has been one of my favorite bands for decades. That’s why it was so painful to watch this dreadful performance.

I think it might have been The Stones last year.
They weren’t great but they were better than The Who.

That is true. But only time will tell whether Soundgarden will achieve the commercial/corporate/generic appeal that the Who has.

I met those guys when I was in my early 20s and working at a Country Restaurant/Bar/Dance Hall outside of Chicago. There were really polite and very down to earth.

All these old bands get halftime gigs because they fit the NFL demographic; that is, upper-middle age men.
I'd bet the average NFL fan is much younger than the average Who fan. The NFL better hope so, unless it wants to follow late 50s and older Who/Stones fans into the grave.
To: randita
Roger Daltry was struggling to carry a tune, stay in time and give the right emphasis at the right time. I would have been embarrassed if I were him, but perhaps he’s past that.

Michael Jackson videos for the younger generations?

I’m 47 and I was appalled. I though Pete Townshend was drunk or distracted or something.

The NFL's globalist, "progressive" bosses (same few constituents obeyed by our government) will probably switch national attention to a game called, "Rollerball," "The Running Man," or something like that.
