How To Stop A Toyota
Industrial Maintenance & Operations Magazine ^ | February 4, 2010 | CNN Video

Posted on 02/04/2010 8:33:26 AM PST by Chi-townChief

Have a Toyota? Then you might want to figure out how you stop the darn thing in case your accelerator pedal gets stuck. It’s pretty simple, regardless of which Toyota model you actually own. Check out the video below for CNN's tips on what to do in rare event, regardless of which kind of vehicle you drive.

Better yet — just go get it fixed, and fast.

OK, some cars may have that feature these days, but it's better to just move the key to ACC, where it won't lock up ANY car's steering.

One additional note on engine rev ('red-lining') - in most cases people are not traveling with more than slight pressure to maintain a speed of between 35 to 70 MPH, far from full throttle.

But, this isn't when the gas peddle locks up. That most often takes place when someone jambs the pedal to the floor to pass or go much faster quickly.

Hence, in many cases engine rev-up will exceed red-line for a few moments - usually less than 30 seconds while stopping from a speed near 60 MPH.

The rev-up will be quite loud - and raise the potential of engine failure on some older vehicles (less than 10 percent chance of for vehicles with lower mileage.)

But your life and well being is more important than that of any motor...

Are you kidding me? that’s EXACTLY what is going on here. You have the gov’t as the owner of a car company, and they can start bashing and investigating their most successful competitor! we have two toyotas, neither are subject to the recall and we have never had a problem with either of them.

Oh don’t worry, gov’t motors will turn their sights on Ford next. they are starting with their most SUCCESSFUL competitor, toyota, first.

"it is brake, not break"

LOL - you're so right! I'm up in the middle of my night and the old brain isn't so functional anyway these days!

And the recent gov’t BS only makes me appreciate them the more. xshub’s GMC Denali, 2+ years old, died quietly in the garage on Tuesday PM and had to be towed off to the dealer for the starter to be fixed.

Toyota has always been kind of a liberalmobile; their sales pitch is decidedly lefty.

One nice thing for Ford - they've picked up much of GM's biz.

I think many are not happy with supporting Obama-motors...

Engineering types I have talked to say (paraphasing) - brakes always trump accelerator because that’s how all cars have been designed. Brakes are a (safety) feature intended to stop acceleration or motion.

Not saying the accelerators aren’t sticking, but sounds like the lowest common denominators behind the wheel are just throwing up their hands and saying, “we’re doomed, we’re all gonna die” as soon as they are faced with anything unexpected like a sticking accelerator when they should be standing on the brakes.

I thought the same but I would also pull the key out to stop the car.

Not a very good idea if you have power steering............LOL!

That is exactly what I would do.

Additionally, “remain calm”.... your greatest danger is panic. Heck, I have been force over to the side of the road, quickly, just so that I could relieve my bladder.... I take diuretics and when they hit, there isn’t much time to react. LOL

A loud motor will not kill you, panic will.

Yesterday, I bought a 2010 Tundra CrewMax Limited and I am not the least bit worried.

Danger of blowing your engine if you put it in neutral (with the jammed accelerator) and then don’t get the ignition off within a second.

I’d advise you to go straight for the ignition. But there, you have to be careful not to turn it too far off, or it may lock your steering.

Right. I hear ya but I guess both is best. Plus, don’t your brakes go on some kind of hiatus too when the engine goes off?

These days almost all cars have power steering and brakes.

The boost for the brakes lasts for a short time, as there will be some compressed air left in the boost reservoir. I think that typically gives you one application, after which it takes much more pedal pressure.

But the boost for power steering goes away pronto. You can still steer, but only with greatly increased force.

So it’s a sucky situation for anyone who isn’t prepared for it.

So you are saying that with the transmission in drive and the accelerator floored the brakes are supposed to stop the car?

In a word... "yes"... :-)

And using more than a word... if your brakes won't do that, then you've got problems with your car's brakes...
