Reasons:
1) Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory.
2) Puerto Rico has a U.S. federal court system as well as their Puerto Rico Supreme Court system (lower court).
3) Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens (and have been since 1917). A large percentage are fluent in English, and thus they would be able to serve as jurors.
4) Puerto Rico has ample hotel and motel accommodations for lawyers, media, gawkers, and the like.
5) Puerto Rico has a few U.S. military installations that could be used as venue or housing during the trial. The mere fact that this is an island would be useful in isolating KSM.
6) KSM himself could be housed at the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Ceiba, or at the former U.S. Navy training island of Vieques, off the East Coast of Puerto Rico. In fact, the trial could be held at either one of these venues.
7) At 20-25% unemployment on the island, the circus trial would help within the population in getting jobs, albeit on a temporary basis.
8) Plenty of direct flights from the U.S. mainland to and from Puerto Rico on a daily basis.
Snacks, let me think, hmmmm..... I got it - Fried Pork Rinds....
Bad idea.
They deserve no trial. Anywhere. They should have been summarily executed on the battlefield.
I totally agree.
But, since this present administration is full of screw-ups, I’m just giving them some ‘viable options’.
Looking at this situation objectively, cll — since you actually live on the island — do you think Puerto Rico could ‘pull this off’?
American Samoa is halfway ‘round the world. Puerto Rico is only 2 hours away from Miami on a direct flight — and about 3 1/2 hours away from DC.
why inflict this on any location? hold the sham at gitmo.
“do you think Puerto Rico could pull this off?”
Sincerely, no. We don’t have the resources. Our weakened tourism industry would suffer inmeasurably from all the risks and all the heightened security.
Take them to the back of the shed and shhot them.
You are probably right, but I’m thinking that it would also be an avenue for Puerto Rico’s relationship with the U.S. to open up even further and to be able to discuss the issue of Status in the long run more seriously.
I would hold the trials on a ship, taking the focus away from any one city or place.
Good idea, Judy!
Ya think Royal Caribbean would go for it? Don’t they now have the biggest cruise ship in the world — Oasis of the Seas, or something like that?
I wouldn’t go too elaborate. Just a nice, big boat that could easily be sunk when the trial ends. Perhaps even before all parties manage to disembark.
Where in Canada do you live, Judy? I’ve been to NB, PEI and Nova Scotia many, many times (as well as Quebec)... Lovely places & people!
New Yorkers are being called out for not wanting the trial held there. Let's see what the people who suck at the teat of the Federal Government can handle.
This is outrageous... I’m LIVID!
Well put.
