These sure bring back the memories. Turn the speakers up a little to drown out the background noise and enjoy a few minutes of nostalgia.
Huh? “Bad Day at Black Rock” is about bias against japanese Americans during the second World War. I don’t remember there even being a horse in it.
You are so right about Cat Ballou. Despite Fonda the movie was and still is an enjoyable watch.
My favorite quote
Jackson to a drunk Kid Sheleen - Look at your eyes.
Kid Sheleen: What’s wrong with my eyes?
Jackson - There all Red
Kid Sheleen: You should see them from my side.
Oh my... you need to get out more. A C1500 SS454 is a short bed Chevy Pickup with the 454 engine and other accouterments
Unforgettable.
Dan Duryea made westerns: Along Came Jones, Black Bart, Winchester ‘73 , Al Jennings of Oklahoma, Ride Clear of Diablo, Rails Into Laramie, Silver Lode, Foxfire, The Marauders, The Bounty Killer and Taggart.
That’s some of the western movies he was in, in the mid 50’s he started appearing on TV and hit most of the TV westerns over the next years until his death in ‘68.
He appeared in 112 movies and TV shows.
Rest in peace Lee Marvin. One of the all time greats.
Our family watched that show religiously when I was a kid. Encore Western Channel has been showing “Have Gun - Will Travel” episodes from 1957-58 since the first of the year. Every show is a hoot, as we learn that Paladin is a West Point graduate (ergo a former Army officer, speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, knows judo, freely quotes Shakespeare (among other authors), has traveled the world and can survive in the jungle, desert, and mountains, his concierge at the Hotel Carlton is a Chinese named Hey Boy, and that despite his somewhat rough looks, Paladin is urbane, witty, and quite the lady’s man.
The show doesn’t seem to be any more violent than anything else from back then, although this morning Paladin got kneecapped.
Richard Boone always played a great villain. Hombre with Paul Newman, Big Jake with the Duke, The Tall T with Randolph Scott - Boone was a great actor.
Now for the ultimate HG-WT trivia question: What is Paladin’s first name?
Chevy’s aren’t big sellers in these parts...this is Ford country, like Montana.
I was in Montana back in the mid 90’s, I asked my buddy why so many people had Fords, he said when we get far back in the woods we want to know that we can get home.
What kinda HP do the other accouterments give the 454?
When I was there (Montana) in the late 1960's we drove Chevy pickups and had GMC trucks. Fords were too "tinny" and prone to rust. Although in the early 1970's GM inherited the rusting problem and kept it until the 90's.
Mine too!
Also love “Our Miss Brooks”!
I’m finishing up that series right now!
If you don’t have an mp3 player, (love my video ipod!) I encourage to look into them.
Best gadget to come out this decade!
I subscribe to several old time radio podcasts through iTunes. Easy, fast and free!
Thanks! I remember that. I kept thinking earlier, after LV posted the James Taylor version, that I knew there was another version that I liked. I couldn’t remember who did it.
Everything just fell into place when I went to listen to this version and saw that they were the ones who also sang Snoopy vs The Red Baron!
I can often remember the songs, but can’t recall the names of the artists. So glad you posted this.
Cool. I’ve never heard that version before. Remarkably well done. Thanks for posting.
Henchman: Rider comin' Roy.
Evil Roy: Kill him!
Henchman: It's a woman!
Evil Roy: Wound her!
Bad Day at Black Rock is a classical Western. Solitary man comes to a solitary town to clear up an injustice. Remake of the story, Bad Day at Hondo.
bump
we should start an obscure movie thread. I've seen several movies recently that I hadn't heard of that were really good when I stumbled across them in reviews or "best of " threads on the internet.
If you'd like a real sleeper hit get "St. Ralph". funny, inspiring and just plain good.
“Bad day at Black Rock” is a “classical Western” the way “Escape From New York” is a travelogue. Spencer Tracy in a suit & hat, carrying a briefcase bears no resemblance to anything but a government man. Ridiculous.
