SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Boise State coach Chris Petersen wants his football team to set challenging but attainable goals. This year, the Broncos set out to win a Bowl Championship Series game. And they did.Winning a national championship wasn't on the radar.
That could change when the team begins preparing for 2010 later this month. The Broncos, who have won 26 of their past 27 games, will finish this season with their second Top 5 ranking in four years.
And they should start next season with their first preseason Top 10 ranking.
All of that was made possible by the No. 6 Broncos' 17-10 upset of No. 3 TCU on Monday night in the Fiesta Bowl. The win made the Broncos the second 14-0 team in major college football since 1900.

I'm an Alabama fan, and I agree. That would be a good game.
Don't know if 45-34 is a "spanking", but I'm sure SEC fans are thrilled that an undefeated SEC team is finally vying for a national championship for the first time in 10 years.
There schedule is not strong to ever be ranked higher than three or four. The computer is the driver on that one
And don’t forget that Alabama had to play their way through such tough games as Chattanooga to get to their undefeated season....LOL
But who's counting; Tebow and the Gators were 'National Champions'*.
*Florida Gators 13-1 , Utah Utes 13-0
THAT sounds like a winner, but the 2010 schedule has already been released:
Sept. 4 San Jose State Bryant-Denny Stadium
Sept. 11 Penn State Bryant-Denny Stadium
Sept. 18 at Duke Durham, N.C.
Sept. 25 *at Arkansas Fayetteville, Ark.
Oct. 2 *Florida Bryant-Denny Stadium
Oct. 9 *at South Carolina Columbia, S.C.
Oct. 16 *Ole Miss Bryant-Denny Stadium
Oct. 23 *at Tennessee Knoxville, Tenn.
Oct. 30 Open Date
Nov. 6 *at LSU Baton Rouge, La.
Nov. 13 *Mississippi State Bryant-Denny Stadium
Nov. 20 Georgia State Bryant-Denny Stadium
Nov. 26 *Auburn Bryant-Denny Stadium
*Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent
That there is one tough schedule folks. Except for San Jose State, Duke and Georgia State (WTH?? they don't deserve to be on the same field as the Tide) it's the SEC gauntlet. And Florida is a regular season game next year. Woo hoo Roll Tide!
They’ve got Penn State back on the schedule? Sweet!!! There is nothing I enjoy more than seeing Alabama beat Penn State.
I agree. Don't get me wrong...in their current strength they could likely hold their own in the SEC, but win a division and win the title game....eh...not so much.
FL won their division is why they went to the SEC title game. Ole Miss was not in their division.
Bama had three “throw away” games. Everyone has those. The fact remains they had 8 SEC games to get through.
Point being that the SEC domination in BCS championship wins isn't quite as impressive considering that 4 out of 5 of those were one loss teams, or in the case of the Tigers in '07, a TWO loss team.
The small schools also like to have those matchups with big name programs because of the TV exposure and the challenge, so its kind of a two way street.
I see your point, but let’s talk Friday.
The potential for upset is certainly appealing and you can’t play all out all season long. You need to at least have an potentially easy game for Homecoming. But GA State??? My Gawd who got paid for that match up.
But ...but..but..the same “lesser conference” folk was whinning about TCU not being in the big game this year...after all, they were undefeated....
You are correct...until they play in a conference with real caliber competition they are not going to the big game..
Not long ago Hawaii was undefeated and played the third place SEC team (Georgia)...before the game, all the lesser conference folk where bitching and moaning about Hawaii not being the the championship game...they got get 45-6.
“Watching the Boise State-TCU game, I didnt come away impressed with either team.”
I agree 100%...turned it off a halftime...just plain ineptness...off sides, false starts...easy touchdown on poorly throw pass...just boring.
Hawaii was an exception to the rule; most of the time these lesser conference bring their A games and perform. Last year the Utah Utes beat the Crimson Tide by the same margin as the National Champion Gators, and two years before that routed the Big East champion by 35 points. Boise State bested Oklahoma in the most memorable BCS bowl in history.
How many BCS games do they have to win before given a chance at the title?
Lest see:
TCU beat Virgina this year 30-14. William and Mary beat Vrigina by almost the exact score. 9-4 Miame beat Virgina 52-17. 10-3 Virgina Tech beat Virgina 42-13. Yet, all the lesser conference folk were up in arms that TCU was the BEST..why, because they were undefeated...then they played a higher ranked team, Boise, and got beat....
Boise...they beat beat Oregon...oh boy, so did Stanford, running up 51 points on them...UCLA (that’s right, the 6 loss UCLA beat Oregon WORSE than Boise did)..7 loss Washington beat UCLA 45-10.
You guys get all glassy eyed just because these teams are “undefeated”...well they wouldn’t be if they played in the SEC, Big-10, Big-12, PAC-10, etc..
OH WE NEED A PLAYOFF SYSTEM, if for no other reason, just so the Boise States and TCU’s of the world would have to face tough competition in the post season....BEFORE a shot at the big game...They can win a bowl game here and there against the other conference runner-ups, but they would NOT survive a playoff system.
Hey thats an idea. Maybe that Chick-Fil-A Labor Day weekend game they play at the Georgia Dome could be Boise State versus a top SEC team.
That would require that these top teams be willing to play a home-and-home series with Boise State which we know will never happen.
