My god, don’t take Zimmer! He’s the best defensive coordinator the Bengals have had in years.

The Skins’ D has considerable talent that has been woefully mismanaged. Their trademark this season was giving up the killing drive late in the 4th quarter. About 8 or 9 times.

I hope Shanahan brings in someone competent.

As far as coaching goes, Joe Gibbs was terrific at getting the most out of his quarterbacks. He's the only NFL coach to win Super Bowls with three different QBs; Joe Theisman, Mark Rypien and Doug Williams. He went to the playoffs with six different quarterbacks. Theisman has gotten a lot of press, but that was like Don Meredith, nobody would remember him if he hadn't gotten into media after his playing days (and of course, the wicked leg break that ended his career.)

I don't have anything against Shanahan, but he was .500 over his last three years in Denver and I can't see Snyder giving him a lot of time to build a team. That's been Washington's problem ever since Snyder bought the team. You can't just keep blowing things up and starting over.

You raise a great point, and one that THIS NFL year emphasized in spades. The point: how great a role does motivation play on any given Sunday?

I am a Giants season ticket holder, and as an NFL East person, you must know what I am speaking about. The last two weeks they just didn't want to play (on defense, at least). Awful. Heads are rolling...(the dee coordinator, Bill Sheridan was fired today).

But why wouldn't these guys play for Zorn? Nobody ever had a bad word to say about him...and yet...

The Giants interviewed today said they liked Sheridan.

This is too complicated...

hold on gotta appease the race baiters first and interview a token black candidate before hiring shanahan. If I were a black coach, I’d charge $100K or so per interview so that the NFL owners can check this box.

I've always wondered what happens in a few years when whites are the minority.

So long as Snyder insists on micromanaging his team, whoever they pick to be coach won’t matter.

Two of my former favorite teams, the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Twins used to change coaches/managers as often as 0bama blames Bush.

And, whenever anyone asked me how I thought they would do in their respective seasons with their newest coach/manager, my standard answer was the Falcons weren't going anywhere until Rankin Smith was looking up at the grass or sold them and the Twins were DOA on opening day until Cal Griffith croaked or sold them.

The same can now be said for the formerly respectable and competitive Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles.

I'm so glad the Smiths are gone.
