On numerous Internet forums, and some email lists, gun owners periodically report being hassled by police when pulled over for routine traffic infractions. . . . But often there is a common thread to these stories the dorky gun owner brought up the gun thing all on her own! . . .

You are not required, but we were told the officer will likely ask if we have the weapon in the car and he may ask to see it. The former officer teaching the class said the officer may unload it and give you back the gun and loose bullets. He said most officers are "cool" about CHLs, but some resent them.
In Texas, you can carry a gun in your car with no CHL.
I don't think so. Even without a CCW I don't think you are required to volunteer the fact you have a weapon in the vehicle. I don't think it even comes up when they run your DL.
I'm not saying to lie just to use common sense.
A cop has no justification for asking about any legal weapon in your car.
The only possible reason he could have would be to try to harass you or steal it. Sometimes just to show his authority.
If a citizen is carrying a legal weapon in his vehicle why business is it of the cop? Absolutely none.
If you are pulled over by the police in the state in which you live, the officer knows from your plates whether you have a CCP.
I have been told that the proper procedure is to place both hands on the dashboard (to keep the officer from being nervous). When the officer approaches he will want to know where the firearm is. At that point you SAY where it is, you don’t reach for it.
Common sense guides you.
If the whole event goes beyond you maybe just getting a ticket, you had better know when it is time to let him/her know. If not, you have no business having a CCW.
Of course, if your state law dictates, follow the law!!!
You be sure to tell a cop that he has no business asking that question, and let me know how that works out for ya.
“If a cop wants to search your car,he’ll do so...and if challenged later he’ll come up with an excuse that a judge is likely to accept.”
This is generally untrue. In Wisconsin, a state trooper searched a commercial vehicle without consent, and the state paid $20,000 in damages. A Retired Wisconsin trooper traveling in Montana, I think it was, was stopped and the officer asked to search the retired trooper’s car. He refused. The Montana officer did not search the car, but contacted the Wisconsin state patrol and complained. The Wisconsin State Patrol told him to pound sand, that the retired trooper was well within his rights.
I know lots of active and retired police. They all say: Never give consent to search your vehicle.
I remember being told it was during training. Will have to double check.
In Michigan if you have a firearm in your car and you are pulled over, you are obligated by law to produce your CPL along with your drivers license and proof of insurance and inform the officer that you have a firearm on board..........
My last ticket which was a bunch of years ago, I attempted to give my CPL to the officer and informed him of my firearm but he said he didn't want to see them........He was ok with it.
As a side note tho, your license plate is flagged with the fact that you have a CPL which would then indicate that you are probably carrying a firearm........
Anyone who informs the officer that pulled them over that they have a CPL and that they have a firearm on board is wise to do so, whether required or not. They're not a dork..........
So how do you do that without getting shot?
You say something along the lines of "Officer, I should tell you that I have a valid concealed carry permit and there is a firearm in the vehicle." As someone noted on this thread, don't blurt out that "I have a gun." Those are frightening words to almost anyone.
Yep, that’s what I was taught too. I have my two carry permits SC and FL and keep them right behind my drivers license, so when asked for the license, I hand them all three (three because I live right on the SC/GA border where the FL permit kicks in for GA. It has happened 3 times ... 2 state cops and 1 local. All were “set up” barricades ... probably looking for illegals or something. Anyway, all three times, they looked at all three, handed them back and said “take care” and off I went. No problems ... just as I was taught in SC “permit school.”
I was stopped by a Georgia State Trooper for speeding. He asked me if I had anything in my car he should know about.
I told him I had lots of things in my car but nothing illegal. I was carrying a gun and had a Georgia concealed carry license at the time.
Just because it is none of his business, you don’t have to tell him that. Same as when a crooked traffic judge (and most of them are) convicts you falsely of speeding. You probably just pay the fine. You don’t call him a crook to his face even tho he is.
After reading this article several times through, I don’t know if he is being sarcastic or what.........
Thousands of people whith guns get pulled over by cops every year. I suspect legal gun owners are among the least likely to get shot.
L
I don’t know about that but they are probably the least likely to shoot a cop.
I am astounded by the number of people, on a forum titled “Free Republic” no less, who think it is proper to inform a cop they are carrying a gun without him even asking.
Also the number who think it is proper for a cop to ask. That whole line of thinking just assumes there is basically something wrong in having a gun.
Good post, YD! Bravo...
Quite frankly I think you’re an idiot.
Blowhard morons like you talk a big game and are likely more compliant than the rest of us. If not, you’re an moron who goes looking for trouble and finds it then squeals like a pig about finding it.
I don’t doubt it. Cops and courts routinely violate the constitution when guns are involved.
People in power absolutely hate the idea of those not in power having the ability to overcome them. That is what arms are all about. That is what controls are all about. They are not just to control guns and knives etc. they are to control people.
