Churchill favors invading Norway
Tuesday, December 12, 1939 www.onwar.com
In London... Churchill speaks in favor of an Allied invasion of Norway. In his speech he says that “it is humanity, and not legality, that we must look to as our judge.”
In the Winter War... The Finns launch a series of attacks against the Soviet 8th Army. Finnish attacks near Kollaa meet with less success. The battles of Tovaajarviand and Kitela, both north of Lake Ladoga, begin.
In Moscow... The Soviet government rejects an appeal, made by the League of Nations, for a ceasefire with Finland and mediation of the dispute.
In Germany... After British submarine Salmon permits the 52,000 ton liner Bremen to proceed, in adherence to British Admiralty instructions to refrain from unrestricted submarine warfare, the German liner arrives in Bremerhaven from Murmansk, having mostly evaded the British blockade.
In Berlin... Hitler orders the production of sea mines and ammunition to be almost doubled.
What am I missing about the point of continually posting this massive amount of information from 60 years ago...other than you have a lot of time on your hands. Please, those of us interested in history, and I am included in that, have our own resources and don’t need someone posting reams of information on a web site.
I, for one, find the postings fascinating. Can’t wait to see what happens next, although the wife and I are going to see “Gone With The Wind” tonight (they raised the price to 15 cents a ticket, so we only go once to the lightshows once a week). Seriously, for those of us with a sense of history these postings are the cats pajamas. Thank you for putting them in a coherent storyline.
Acutally, it's from 70 years ago. If you go to my profile there is a semi-explanation down towards the bottom.
Please, those of us interested in history, and I am included in that, have our own resources
Think of this as another of those resources.
and dont need someone posting reams of information on a web site.
There are currently 203 people on the WWII+70 ping list who would differ.
You must have high-level connections with the studio since the Atlanta premier isn't until next week. Are you planning to drop in at Selznick's house for a private screening?
For those of you living in 2009 TCM will air "GWTW" on Tuesday the 19th, the 70th anniversary of the above mentioned premier, and follow it with "The Making of a Legend: Gone Wind" (1988). The whole thing begins at 5:00 PM PST and runs just over six hours. Stock up on popcorn.
Homer, you really should stop going to folks houses and forcing them to click on these threads.
Ahhh 203 on a ping list....by request?
It really is irritating seeing this clutter.
I think it is great — it like “living” history — seeing what was actually happening on this very day, through the eyes of those who were living it at the time.
They didn’t know what was coming next. That makes this approach to studying history — watching it unfold in their realtime, fascinating and engaging.
Thanks for doing this Homer, and HD1200, you certainly can eschew these threads and go about reviewing history your own way.
>>It really is irritating seeing this clutter.<<
Who made you the thread content police?
The only “clutter” on these threads is your whining.
I forgot to add “N00b!”
I hope everyone takes a few minutes to read the saga of the Polish Submarine Orzel.
It should be made into a movie.
uh, ya, reading incorrect, made up, and just as biased as today “news” reports from 70 years ago really gives one an insight into history doesn’t it....
Me, I prefer books and resources from credited sources where the facts of history have been studied and more accurately reported than the news hype of the day 70 years ago.
Like I said, this is clutter on a good web site and it is real irritating.
Think about it; how much credit do you give to newspaper reports of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan today and do you think it wise for someone in 70 years to be reading these same reports and giving them an ounce of time and credibility even if just for the entertainment value?
>>Like I said, this is clutter on a good web site and it is real irritating.<<
Well, you are clutter on a good web site and are really irritating, n00b.
You don’t get a say on what is or isn’t good on this site (although if I had a vote, I certainly would have YOU removed as useless and irritating content).
If you don’t like it, just don’t click on it.
The saga of the Orzel is one of those fascinating tidbits of WW2 history, of which there are many.
As for HD1200, I find the best practice is “mokusatsu.”
