Just picked up a 1943 M1 Garand.
What I'd like to know is...EVERYTHING about the Garand.
1. I need to know where to get ball ammo to feed it (it's a bit scarce, as far as I can tell);
2. I'd like to know the best data sheet/book on the Garand (breakdown, cleaning, greasing, etc.);
3. The best info I can get on making the weapon as accurate as possible (peep sights on the current configuration);
4. Where I'm most likely to pick up the best (and best valued!) accessories for it (slings, parts, etc).
I know...I should Google all of this. I HAVE! The Google results are enormous! But as always, FReepers have been the best on gun stuff!
And it's my bet that there are some Garand owners/aficionados on FreeRepublic...
Any thoughts or ideas...or even comments about the rifle?
Thanks in advance...

Brand new Winchester.
The first 12 rounds worked fine.
NOT GUILTY!
Best thread in months on FR! Perhaps one of the “sexiest” sounding guns in the history of firearms >>>except for the “PING” of an empty clip flying out....
I am missing an M1 in my arsenal for sure..
opted for another Kimber .45 instead....
and THESE :)

And surgery to remove a piece of metal from his chest, if I remember correctly.
The hand was just field dressed.
I have fire Rem 150 some without trouble but I always think of those pix.

He has been shooting for about 6 months now. He is damn good with a little Marlin .22 auto I have. Here he is first time with my Winchester .30-.30

Marlin .22 is a good starting rifle and I use mine just for plinking on a rainy day.
One important thing: do not use modern 30-06 intended for modern bolt-action rifles in a Garand. They often are more powerful than the rifle is designed for. I managed to damage one that way, and had to replace the operating rod.
Good start. What ammo and what weight bullet? Also, are there better op rods to account for commercial ammo?
Model 60 Glenfield.
Get an adjustable gas plug like this one: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=44955/pid=1538/sku/M1_Adjustable_Gas_System if you want to shoot commercial .30-06 ammo in your M1. Then you can adjust the force on the oprod to the minimum to make it cycle.
Sweet, on my Christmas list. Thanks
(they are really simple to work with and reasonably accurate and will take abuse. I have had to slam the bolt open when the ammo
{hotshot has some sort of polymer coating which messed up one of my mosins}
gummed things up or loose tolerances were too loose)

Hornady makes modern ammo specifically for Garands.
I was wondering that. Is it just commercial ammo in general, or the heavier bullets (and so recoil) that cause the problem with bent op rods.
I have fire 150 stuff that seems fine so far, but not enough to recommend it.
Thanks for the input.
