Speak Now, Tiger, Or Forever Hold Your Peace

Speak Now, Tiger, Or Forever Hold Your Peace Golfer must speak publicly about car crash — and rumors of Uchitel affair

Courtney Hazlett

When Tiger Woods got in the car just before 2:25 a.m. Friday, he didn’t just crash into a fire hydrant. He had a head-on collision with another object: the invisible bowels of the bad-publicity machine, which in more than 13 years of professional golf, he’d been able to avoid.

As a college athlete in the mid-1990s, my circle overlapped with Woods’ from time to time, and I can attest there are plenty of stories about a slightly awkward Stanford golfprodigy that could be filed under “typical college kid behavior,” or twisted into tabloid fodder.

As a fledgling journalist at Golf World magazine in the early 2000s, I can attest to similar stories of the youngest golfer to achieve a career grand slam behaving in a way that might have looked bad on paper.

But these stories never really materialized. Thrown clubs and the errant F-bombs were chalked up to pressures of the sport and apologies followed. So why has an accident in the driveway turned into a full-blown train wreck? Because much like a guy named David Letterman, up until now Woods’ public life and private persona have had few intersections, and the former has been for the most part, unimpeachable.

Noooooo....I’m not walking away if someone is swinging a golf club at me....don’t be foolish, not if I have a chance to drive away to safety. A seven iron upside your head hurts just as much on a golf course across the street or on the beach....right?

You don’t even know if he was DUI, and the news reports aren’t neccessarily accurate...I wouldn’t convict someone based off of them.

And yes....a police officer with common sense...would not bust someone for DUI if it was confirmed that they were fleeing someone trying to bludgeon them with a golf club...driving a reasonable distance from the scene (again...key word is common sense).

Typing “why not walk to a golf course” behind the relative comfort of your computer.....well its not the same as actually being in the situation and making a split second decision to try and save yourself.

And he won’t get charged with DUI...either cause he wasn’t DUI or he is Tiger Woods or the cops are using common sense...which for all intents and purposes means he wasn’t DUI. I think if they suspected he was DUI, they would not be so relaxed in not talking to him when they went to his house today.

Lastly, demanding someone be charged with DUI based off news reports is foolish. You were not there and don’t know all the facts. In this case, the cops don’t know all the facts yet.

He left the house after she gave him facial lacerations and could easily have walked across the street to the golf course or beach and been safe IN THE DARK. Instead he got in the car and sat there until she attacked the vehicle at which point he attempted to drive away. The police reported that he was in and out of consciousness and on pain medication, and that the injuries were not the result of the crash.

LOL, save his life? Are you kidding? He sat in the car and gave her a chance to attack it after telling a friend that he needed to get her a Kobe Special because she “went ghetto” on him. Don’t act like Tiger was some poor victim. He cheated on his wife and drove under the influence after failing to get out of there when he could.

The cops know the facts from the scene and should have tested his blood, that’s a no brainer. The cops also know that she lied to them and has changed her story, as well as both of them avoiding two interviews with police. Anyone else would be charged.

It’s too bad spouses can’t also sue for emotional pain as well. Or that they can’t be prosecuted. Emotional pain (caused by such things as finding out about an affair) is worse than a scratch on the face. In its own way, it’s an assault as well.

I agree with you. I can't imagine how horrible it would be to be someone's loyal helpmate, sitting there with two babies as they gallivant the world, hearing love over the phone, and probably some false stories, and then to find out in the MEDIA that your husband you dedicated your life to has been banging some skank for six months. And lying to you all the while. I'd RATHER be hit in the face with a golf club*. I don't think I am alone.

*Not that I think she did that to him -- all we know about is scratches.

Mr woods is not required to provide physical evidence to anyone about himself are his wife and since no one saw him in the car they cannot prove he was driving it.

That's IT! You hit on the perfect defense! The SUV did it alone! It bashed in it's own rear end with a golf club and it terrorized the neighborhood, destroying the hydrant and the tree. Why, there are thousands of cases as precedent:

SUV Kills 2 Children at Border Crossing

Halloween night turns tragic when SUV kills child in Nutley

SUV kills pedestrian in Miramar

“Who the hell names their kid Tiger anyways?”

This comes from Wikipedia, but I have heard the same story many times before.

“At birth, Woods was given “Eldrick” and “Tont” as first and middle names. His middle name, Tont, is a traditional Thai name.[17] He got his nickname from a Vietnamese soldier friend of his father, Vuong Dang Phong, to whom his father had also given the “Tiger” nickname.”

You were saying ...

Pressing criminal charges on someone for “emotional” issues has got to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on this forum to date.

Not at all. You press criminal charges on the basis of whatever the actions are. If emotional problems caused the actions, that's another matter. And if, during criminal proceedings, it's determined that these emotional problems are relevant, then they can deal with them and force them to be taken care of (again, if they are really relevant). Many people just "use" the mantra of "emotional problems" to excuse criminal behavior.

And also, many times, the only way a person may be forced to finally deal with emotional problems, especially if they result in criminal behavior, is if the legal system demands it, as part of a deal and/or conviction process.

Must be nice to be able to hit a fire Hydrant and a tree at 3am and not even have to talk to the Cops.

Actually, no..., it's everyone's individual right to not have to talk to the cops. It's your choice to do so or not. And, in fact, any good attorney will always advise you to never, ever talk to the cops (and any attorney who doesn't, get rid of him or her as an attorney ... LOL ...).

100000000000+++++++% agree that he PERSONALLY does not nor should talk to the LEOS.

But when normal people do such things they OR THEIR legal rep REPRESENTATIVES DO have to talk to the authorities.

I have never heard of a situation in which one could hit two different objects with a vehicle at 3am and simply be able to refuse to talk to the LEOS.

For a conservative not to "know" much less "exercise" his Constitutional rights is sort of amazing... :-)

I have told my sons, if they are ever (God forbid) arrested, they are to SAY NOTHING except they want to talk to a lawyer. Even what you think is a simple explanation that will clear things up can come back to haunt you.

Exactly right. I'm surprised that more FReepers (being the conservatives that they are and knowing the Constitution) don't exercise their rights or apparently don't know their rights... :-)

Depends upon state law, but technically the fire hydrant is public property, built to code, and part of the utility district’s property, designed and installed to meet fire protection codes. If a hydrant is ruptured, the fire fighting capacity of the system is reduced until the line is isolated. Additionally, the occupants of structures within 350ft of the hydrant might also be deprived of their fire protection systems until it is repaired, with others in the same lateral or loop also effected.

The hydrant is likely built adjacent to a roadway on a rights of way established by county codes, which has also now been breached.

Law enforcement has very good cause to investigate the cause of the damage. If the testimony provided to the officers investigating the incident appear to be concealing other criminal actions, then other violations of law may have occurred inviting further investigation.

For Conservatives not to be able to follow a simple short thread explains why we keep losing election, after election, after election.

Actually, no..., they do not have to talk to the authorities. They don't even have to testify in court if they are charged with something.

It's something they may choose to do, but they do not have to do it. That's the key. No one is forced to talk to the authorities.

Now, the problem is -- is that most "ordinary people" don't know this... and therein is their downfall...

What you and all other FReepers should know and practice...

Talking to the Police by Professor James Duane

Professor James Duane’s now famous 5th Amendment lecture - popularly known as “Don’t talk to the police!” - has amassed a considerable internet following. The lecture, given as part of Regent Law School’s spring preview weekend.

Well, in the last Presidential election, there was a simple "number" that explains the loss of the election for us conservatives -- basically that 10 million more people voted for Obama than voted for our guy... LOL...

In the court of public opinion, where many shoppers invest their income on merchandise marketed via celebrity endorsements, the veracity of the celebrity may greatly effect sales in markets with purchasers who value character.

There are public externalities when celebrities are corrupted.

Tiger has been one of the few black celebrities associated with being a ‘family man’, countering the stereotype of marital infidelity being a racial characteristic. Adding insult to injury, the tabloid reported affair also adds fuel to the stereotype that black men, if they become successful, will not marry or even cheat with a black woman.

The events not only effect that particular marriage, they influence the public perception of the institution of marriage.

I am shocked, SHOCKED, I tell you, to learn a golfing superstar who earns $100 million a year might be in the company of another woman not his wife.
